French-American sculptor Louise Bourgeois was born in Paris in 1911, settling in New York in 1938. She began exhibiting in New York in the 1940s and has played a vital role in contemporary art for over half a century. Her 1982 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York was the gallery's first ever retrospective for a woman. It revealed a sculptor of immense distinction working with many materials, from marble and bronze to latex, fabric and mirrors. Since then, Bourgeois has exhibited worldwide, producing a beguiling body of work featuring spiders, cages, drawings and a range of found and sculpted objects. A recurring theme in her work is her troubled childhood, particularly her problematic relationship with her father. In 1993, she represented the USA at the Venice Biennalle and was the first artist to have an exhibition at Tate Modern in 2000. The book, accompanying a major retrospective touring exhibition, will provide an overview of Bourgeois' entire career as an influential creator of sculpture, installation, drawings and prints, as well as examining her activities as a writer, critic and diarist. It will include an illustrated biography, selected writings by the artist and a full chronology, making it the most thorough and up-to-date publication on the artist in print.

-A retrospective of the life and career of artist/sculptor Luk Van Soom With an impressive career of over 40 years that has resulted in the installation of large-scale art projects in numerous public spaces, artist/sculptor Luk Van Soom needs no further introduction in Belgium and the Netherlands. This beautifully designed art book is a first retrospective on his life and career. In a series of discussions and interviews with the artist, author Johan Pas sheds some light on the influences, philosophy, thinking and themes that have been vital for Van Soom's artistic development: the relation between life and passion, travel and art, etc. Together, these texts present a kaleidoscopic image of Luk Van Soom's life and work that is just as multifaceted and compelling as his art. At the age of seventeen Van Soom took his first tentative steps as an artist. Now 40 years later, he has an impressive curriculum including many exhibitions, commissions and projects both in his home country and abroad. Moreover, he created more than 50 monumental works for the public space in Belgium and the Netherlands, among which some very well know sights, such as Walhalla (1993, Antwerp), The Man from Atlantis (2003, Brussels), The Wharfinger (2005, Zwolle) and Walking to Magdalena (2012, Ostend). Text in English and Dutch.

Louise Bourgeois written by Rainer Crone and has been published by Prestel Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Art categories.

Louise Bourgeois: The Secret of the Cells is the first publication to present an introduction to the stylistic diversity and scope of Bourgeois' work within the context of 20th-century sculpture. This volume focuses on her installations, which she calls "cells". For the first time, all 27 cells -- a cycle which Bourgeois has now declared complete -- are depicted in both full-page and detailed illustrations, as well as being catalogued according to their component parts. The comprehensive narrative on Louise Bourgeois' fascinating life -- the most detailed and extensive to date -- is documented in over 100 photographs from the artist's own archive, many of which have never been published before. These range from her youth in Paris, her student years at the art academy under Ferdinand Leger, and her experiences with the leading artists of the New York School in the 40s and 50s, up to her famous performance, The Confrontation, in 1978. In 1982 the Museum of Modern Art honored Bourgeois in a grand retrospective of her work; in 1992 her installation Precious Liquids caused an international sensation at documenta IX. Her radical re-evaluation of the medium of sculpture, particularly evident in her unusual and unparalleled work of the last 10 years, calls for a thorough review of art in modern times.
