Un palazzo con la sua alta torre, il “più nobile e il più spazioso” che si potesse ammirare nella Roma del Rinascimento: la sua storia affonda le radici nel cuore antico della città pontificia. Viene edificato per volontà del veneziano Pietro Barbo, cardinale e poi papa con il titolo di Paolo II, in forte contiguità con la chiesa di SanMarco “de Urbe” e in posizione dominante su una vasta piazza che lo corona con le sue statue e marmi antichi, vere reliquie d’arte e d’archeologia, e diventa un secolo più tardi oggetto di munifico dono alla Serenissima Repubblica, sede, forse la più importante, di una sua delegazione diplomatica fino alla fine della sua storia. All’interno, splendide collezioni di scultura antica composte, sull’onda del gusto dominante dell’epoca, per quegli ambienti e quelle sale, dal fondatore e poi anche dal suo successore, il cardinal Domenico Grimani, vir doctissimus: collezioni poi travolte in una diaspora infinita che le vedrà disperse e disseminate, lungo tutto il corso dell’età moderna, nei palazzi delle grandi famiglie e Signorie italiane ed europee, ricercate per arricchire altre collezioni ed ornare altre dimore, e oggi altre sedi museali. Intanto, nel corso del tempo, altri capolavori dell’arte scultorea - in legno, in bronzo, in terracotta - si raccolgono e si sedimentano in quegli ambienti e in quelle sale. Questo, e molto altro ancora, racconta il presente volume, originato dalla forte collaborazione tra due Istituzioni del Ministero: l’una rappresentata dal Museo omonimo, facente parte del circuito della Soprintendenza Speciale per il Patrimonio Storico, Artistico ed Etnoantropologico e per il PoloMuseale della Città di Roma; l’altro costituito dall’Archivio di Stato di Venezia, che con il suo - ancora parzialmente inesplorato - patrimonio documentario, in questo caso non solo di dispacci e relazioni ma anche di splendidi documenti disegnati, continua a rappresentare una fonte primaria per gli studiosi d’arte e di storia. Intorno, una fitta rete di collaborazioni istituzionali, che annovera l’Archivio di Stato di Vienna, la Regione del Veneto e il Dipartimento di storia dell’Università di Padova, e che si è poi estesa, per seguire i mille fili della ricerca, all’Archivio di Stato di Roma e di Torino, ai Musei Capitolini, al British Museum di Londra e alMusée du Louvre di Parigi, alMuseo degli Argenti di Palazzo Pitti e al Museo di Santa Giulia di Brescia, ai Musei Archeologici Nazionali di Napoli e di Firenze. Il risultato non si misura solo entro lo spazio di questo primo volume, fortemente connotato dalla dimensione “veneziana” della ricerca, ma andrà valutato alla luce dei tre volumi che lo seguono, e che danno conto del censimento sistematico della collezione di scultura conservata nel Museo di Palazzo Venezia, un patrimonio nel patrimonio. In this volume, Latin Americanist scholars explore the recent evidence relating to the ways in which partial state failure in the continent is interacting with new types of organized violence, thereby undermining the process of democratic consolidation that has characterized Latin America over the past two decades. This 'new violence' stems - as this book's case studies from Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Venezuela, Brazil and other countries, including El Salvador, show - from a heterogeneous variety of social actors including drug mafias, peasant militias and urban gangs (collectively referred to as actores armadas), as well as state-related actors like the police, military intelligence agencies and paramilitary forces. These armed actors are reproducing organized social and political violence beyond the confines of democratic politics and civil society. The results, as the authors warn, include both 'governance voids' - domains where the legitimate state is effectively absent in the face of armed actors prevailing by force - and an erosion of the capacity and willingness of state officials themselves to abide by the rule of law. These tendencies, in turn, pave the way for a possible reinstallation of authoritarian regimes under the control of politicized armies or, at the very least, the spread of state violence in one form or another. Why these tendencies need to be taken so seriously is, the authors argue, because of the deeper social roots underlying them - notably the failure of neoliberal economic policies and weakened state structures to deliver the jobs, standards of living and social services every democratic citizenry has a right to expect. The Argentinian collapse and persistent Colombian and Venezuelan crises receive special attention in this regard.
