Viața trecută a poporului român este plină de întâmplări de toatefelurile, de la munca de fiecare zila petreceri pline de fast, de la războaie nimicitoare la înălțarea de impresionante biserici, de la scrierea cărților la horele cântate și jucate de fete și flăcăi, de la iubiri și doruri la uri și plângeri, de la dărnicie la egoism etc. Românii și-au trăitviața așa cum au putut, nici mai bine și nici mai rău decât alții. Nu există popoare cu istorii bune și altele cu istorii rele, nici popoare cu trecut curat ca lacrima și plinnumai de fapte bune, față în față cu altele, condamnate să facă numai rele și să fie urâte, ci existăpur și simplu popoare egale, caretrebuie respectate. Ca să putem înțelege și face acest lucru, trebuie să cunoaștem trecutul nostru și al celor din jur. Faptul nu ne va ajuta prea multsă prevedem viitorul – cum mai cred unii –, dar ne va face mai înțelepți și ne va pregăti să înțelegem mai bine și să prețuim viața pe care o trăim.IOAN-AUREL POP este președinte al Academiei Române, profesor și rector al Universității Babeș-Bolyai din Cluj-Napoca, autor și coautor a peste 70 de cărți, tratate și manuale și a peste 500 de studii și articole. Este Doctor Honoris Causa a 10 universități din țară și din străinătate și membru al unor academii și societăți savante străine. A fost visiting professor al unor universități din SUA, Italia, Franța, Ungaria și Austria.
