Juan Luis Martínez’s Philosophical Poetics is the first English-language monograph on this Chilean visual artist and poet (1942–1993). It has two principal aims: first, to introduce Martínez’s poetry and radical aesthetics to English-speaking audiences, and second, to carefully analyze key aspects of his literary production. The readings undertaken in this book explore Martínez’s intricate textual formalisms, the self-effacement that characterizes his poetry, and the tension between his local (Latin American, Chilean) aspect and the cosmopolitanism or transnationalism that insists on the global relevance of his work. Through his artistic engagement with a number of esoteric concepts—for example, his recuperation of pataphysical “logic” and Oulipian combinatorics, mathematical reasoning, Eastern thought, and the historical avant-gardes—Martínez creates a rigorous quasi-system of citation and erasure that is a philosophical poetics as well as a poetic philosophy. Poets on the Edge critically explores the relationship between poetry and its context through the work of four Latin American poets: Chilean Vicente Huidobro (1898-1948), Peruvian César Vallejo (1893-1938), Chilean Juan Luis Martínez (1943-1993), and Argentine Néstor Perlongher (1949-1992). While Huidobro and Vallejo establish their poetics on the edge in the context of worldwide conflagrations and the emergence of the historical avant-garde during the first half of the twentieth century, Martínez and Perlongher produce their work in the context of the Chilean and Argentine dictatorships respectively, developing different strategies to overcome the panoptic societies of control installed throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Martínez recreates the avant-garde tradition in a playful manner to avoid censorship and also proposes a philosophical poetics to stage a utopian project oriented toward redesigning the house of civilization that has fallen apart. Perlongher unfolds his peculiar Neobaroque sensitivity in order to reshape the complex Latin American identities, culminating his poetic project with two collections written under the influence of ayahuasca-based ceremonies. Poets on the Edge offers the reader a new understanding of the hybrid and edgy nature of Latin American poetics and subjectivity as well as of the evolution of poetry written in Spanish during the twentieth century.

Cu cuţitul în mînă, soţul moartei o tîrăşte pe femeia credincioasă pe uliţele satului şi o ameninţă cu moartea, convins fiind că rugăciunile pe care femeia credincioasă le adresase Dumnezeului ei l‑au mîniat pe dumnezeul lui, iar acesta i‑a omorît soţia. „Te voi lăsa să trăieşti ― urla el pe uliţele satului ― numai dacă Dumnezeul tău o va învia pe soţia mea!” Tremurînd şi aşteptîndu‑şi sfîrşitul, femeia credincioasă a făcut singurul lucru pe care‑l putea face: cu vocea stinsă, a adresat o rugăciune Tatălui ei ceresc. Moarta s‑a ridicat în capul oaselor… Despre o astfel de confruntare între Yahweh şi dumnezeii Egiptului citim pe paginile cărţii Exod. Iar atunci cînd evenimentul exodului s-a derulat şi poporul a trecut prin mare ca pe uscat, preotul Madianului a exclamat: „Cunosc acum că Domnul este mai mare decît toţi dumnezeii; căci în lucrul în care s-au purtat cu trufie, El a fost mai pesus de ei” (Ex. 18:11). Dar Yahweh, Domnul Dumnezeul cerului şi al pămîntului este acelaşi ieri, azi şi în veci! De aceea, învăţînd să-L cunoaştem de pe paginile Scripturii, Îl vom descoperi lucrînd şi astăzi în istorie cu aceeaşi putere.
