Negli anni Sessanta la Fallaci, che è già scrittrice di fama e inviata di punta de "L'Europeo", trascorre lunghi periodi in America, tra gli astronauti e i ricercatori di Cape Kennedy. Li osserva, li esamina, li interroga. Ne risulta il diario di una donna che vive i suoi tempi affrontando con curiosità ed entusiasmo le scoperte della scienza e della tecnologia, ma che guarda all'impresa spaziale con timore e molti dubbi. La narrazione prende la forma di un dialogo in parte immaginario con il padre. Con lui Oriana discute in modo anche polemico, consapevole della distanza che li divide: l'anziano genitore attaccato all'autenticità delle cose, agli alberi e alla terra che hanno nutrito intere generazioni. E la figlia che conduce la sua inchiesta nel "mondo nuovo" domandandosi a prezzo di quale felicità o infelicità l'individuo conquisterà la Luna e gli altri pianeti. "Se il Sole muore," le aveva detto Ray Bradbury in un memorabile incontro "la nostra razza muore col Sole E muore Omero, e muore Michelangelo, e muore Galileo. Salviamoli dunque, salviamoci." Dopo il suo appassionante viaggio, "piena di disperato ottimismo", la Fallaci si affida al futuro. "Costi quello che costi noi vivremo lassù."

"retiredafb" asserisce d'essere William Rutledge, gi un civile pilota collaudatore impiegato dall'Aeronautica Militare degli Stati Uniti (l'USAF) prima di prendere parte all'Apollo 20 nel ruolo di Comandante, nell'agosto 1976. Apollo 20 ed Apollo 19 sarebbero state due segretissime missioni spaziali militari congiunte, USA-URSS, che avrebbero avuto come obbiettivo un allunaggio sul lato lontano della Luna, per investigare alcune anomalie lunari. Translating Travel examines the relationship between travel writing and translation, asking what happens when books travel beyond the narrow confines of one genre, one literary system and one culture. The volume takes as its starting point the marginal position of contemporary Italian travel writing in the Italian literary system, and proposes a comparative reading of originals and translations designed to highlight the varying reception of texts in different cultures. Two main themes in the book are the affinity between the representations produced by travel and the practices of translation, and the complex links between travel writing and genres such as ethnography, journalism, autobiography and fiction.
