Seasonal Variations of the Eskimo is one of the first books in anthropology to adopt a sociological approach to the analysis of a single society. Mauss links elements of anthropology and human geography, arguing that geographical factors should be considered in relation to a social context in all its complexity. The work is an illuminating source on the Eskimo and a proto-type of what an anthropologist should do with ethnographic data and exerted considerable influence on the development of social anthropology. The Informal Economy written by Dominique Boels and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-10 with Social Science categories.

This book examines the nature and regulation of the informal economy by means of a collective case study in a highly regulated Western country. The book, situated at the intersection of criminology and sociology, investigates the relation between formal, informal and criminal work in three urban and rural labour markets (seasonal work, street trade and sex work) alongside the impact of state policies on informality. Boels uncovers the differential position authorities take regarding these labour markets, notwithstanding the presence of informality and often vulnerable position of workers in each one of them. With a distinctive focus on informal workers, and through in-depth interviews, this study explores the life and work of informal workers, including their experiences with regulators, their motivations for working informally and their perceptions of state policy. In short, this book gives a voice to often ignored but crucial participants of the informal economy. The detailed discussion of the results and the links to theoretical frameworks will ensure this book is of particular interest to scholars of urban economics and governance, criminology, and sociology.

Seasonality In Human Mortality written by Roland Rau and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-11-24 with Political Science categories.

Seasonal fluctuations in mortality are a persistent phenomenon, but variations from culture to culture pose fascinating questions. This book investigates whether sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors play a role as important for seasonal mortality as they do for mortality in general. Using modern statistical methods, the book shows, for example, that in the United States the fluctuations between winter and summer mortality are smaller the more years someone has spent in school.

This collection explores sociological analyses of home in Canada, drawing upon studies of family, urban and rural communities, migration and immigration, and other areas to discuss the idea of “home.” This volume, organized across three parts, moves from the micro-level of personal homemaking, to the meso-level of neighbourhood community, to the macro-level of political ecology. The contributors, both new and established scholars, draw upon a plurality of standpoints, including gendered, class-based, racialized, and Indigenous voices. It is the first Canadian collection of readings on the sociology of home.
