A major part of the annual worship experiences in the Catholic Church revolves around the commemoration of the saints. This book gives a brief history of these outstanding personalities who have been enrolled in the church's "hall of fame." They cover the period from the first to the twentieth century. Some are household names as St. Peter, the first pope, St. Patrick of Ireland, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Therese, the Little Flower, of France and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton of Baltimore, Maryland. Some others are lesser known to us but equally known to the Lord, to whom they dedicated their lives, love and daily service. Their way of life can be both a guide and inspiration to us on our pilgrim journey through this world. Just as there are four seasons in our calendar year, so there are four seasons in the church year. These are Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. This book gives a short commentary on the weekday scripture readings for these four liturgical seasons. Many people have found these spiritual thoughts enlightening and very helpful in living the particular seasons in union with the liturgy of the church.

"Ancient saints or archaic seasons might seem irrelevant to ministry with children and young people. But ignoring them risks losing the rhythm and flow of the church year, and the understanding of how the gospel story fits together. This guide explores why it is vital to help children and young people make sense of Christian seasons and celebrations, and examines ways to do so. It also outlines how to connect with and learn from the vast, strange and amazing history of the church, its saints and the Christian faith"--Page 4 of cover.

Excerpt from The Church Year: Studies for the Sundays, Sacred Seasons and Saints' Days of the Christian Year The object iof this book is almost, it not indeed alto gether, devotional. It will in some measure serve its purpose ii it calls fresh attention to the great spiritual truths enshrined in the Book of Common Prayer, and awakens a deeper interest on the part of Churchmen in the rich treasures oi devotion which the Christian Year provides. The treatment is in the main expository, and it is designed to couple the heartfelt devotion of the Christian life expressed in sincere and earnest worship with the great outstanding truths of the Word of God. God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.' The religion oi Jesus Christ was intended to spiritualize all life, and to bring to bear upon our humanity all the rich blessing oi a Father's gracious love, the cleansing power of a Saviour's precious blood, and the sanctifying grace of the Holy Spirit. While it does not profess to be an historical manual, much less a critical discussion of liturgical questions, or of points of interpretation, yet it will be found that it gives much useful information in regard to Church customs, advocates throughout sound Church principles, and aims to build up a devout and earnest type of Christian life. In a world of communication overload, if an announcement is to become life-giving and growth producing, we need to make a deliberate choice to 'listen', shifting our focus from hearing words to discerning the message behind them. This is the technique underlying the Word of God and exemplified by the parables. By tapping into the life experience of his contemporaries, Jesus drew the attention of his hearers to hearing the words and then to listening to the message. Whether in a desert place, out on the sea, on top of a mountain, fishing on a lake, in temple precincts or sitting by a well in Samaria, Jesus proclaims and reveals the active presence of God at work where people are, in the ordinary unfolding of our ordinary lives; and the location, often unexpected and unwelcomed, gives a heightened strength to the message proclaimed. God is active and present in the ordinary, and God must be found in the ordinary. That is the key assumption underlying these reflections on Saints and Seasons. Peter Varengo is a Salesian priest with forty years experience in Religious Education and Adult Retreat Ministry. He studied Theology at the Salesian University in Messina and Rome, and Religious Education in Dundalk (Ireland) and Boston College (USA). He is a member of the teaching faculty of the University of Divinity with thirty years' teaching practice in Religious Education at Catholic Theological College, Melbourne. Peter has also published in the field of spirituality and liturgy, including three volumes of biblical-spiritual reflections on the Sunday Gospels- Salt of the Earth, Light of the World (Year A), Healing Presence (Year B) and Seed Among the Vines (Year C).
