Sebald, 1944 im allgäuischen Wertach geboren, wanderte 1966 nach England aus, lehrte dort als Professor für Europäische Literatur und wurde im letzten Jahrzehnt vor seinem frühen Tod 2001 als Prosaautor berühmt. Zu einem Wendepunkt wurde Sebalds Auswanderung durch die Begegnung mit Exilanten, die ihn mit der deutschen Kriegsgeschichte konfrontierten. In seinen Prosawerken bringt er die Zeugen einer jüdischen Leidenserfahrung zum Sprechen, indem er ihnen einen deutschen Erzähler zum Begleiter gibt. Im ersten Teil des Buches untersucht Jakob Hessing Sebalds akademische und essayistische Werke. Sie stehen im Spannungsfeld zwischen Feind und Freund, zwischen verhassten Autoren wie Carl Sternheim und Alfred Döblin einerseits und literarischen Vorbildern wie Franz Kafka, Joseph Roth und Peter Handke andererseits. Im zweiten Teil beleuchtet Verena Lenzen Fragen der Zeugenschaft und der Erinnerung in Sebalds letztem Buch »Austerlitz" (2001). Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Leitfiguren Jean Améry, H. G. Adler und Primo Levi, und die Tatorte der Gewaltgeschichte von Brüssel bis Breendonk.

This book uses the annotations in W.G. Sebald's private library (held in the Deutsches Literaturarchiv, Marbach) to construct an interpretation of his prose style as fundamentally dialectical. Alongside his readings of writers such as Benjamin, Bernhard, Bassani, and Lévi-Strauss, it uses in particular Adorno's and Horkheimer's "Dialektik der Aufklärung" to help develop a close reading of Sebald's syntax and narrative structures. The key concern of Sebald's prose emerges not as the Holocaust, but rather the dialectical processes of ,progress' and ,regression' inherent in history.

This book offers a new critical perspective on the perpetual problem of literature's relationship to reality and in particular on the sustained tension between literature and historiography. The scholarly and literary works of W.G. Sebald (1944–2001) serve as striking examples for this discussion, for the way in which they demonstrate the emergence of a new hybrid discourse of literature as historiography. This book critically reconsiders the claims and aims of historiography by re-evaluating core questions of the literary discourse and by assessing the ethical imperative of literature in the 20th and 21st centuries. Guided by an inherently interdisciplinary framework, this book elucidates the interplay of epistemological, aesthetic, and ethical concerns that define Sebald's criticism and fiction. Appropriate to the way in which Sebald's works challenge us to rethink the boundaries between discourses, genres, disciplines, and media, this work proceeds in a methodologically non-dogmatic way, drawing on hermeneutics, semiotics, narratology, and discourse theory. Sebald's books are sui generis hybrids of fiction, travelogue, autobiography and historical expos», in which a narrator (both Sebald and not Sebald) comments on the quick blossoming of natural wonders and the long deaths that come of human atrocities. All his narratives are punctuated with images--murky photographs, architectural plans, engravings, paintings, newspaper clippings--inserted into the prose without captions and often without obvious connection to the words that surround them. This important volume includes a rare 1993 interview called "'But the written word is not a true document': A Conversation with W.G. Sebald about Photography and Literature," in which Sebald talks exclusively about his use of photographs. It contains some of Sebald's most illuminating and poetic remarks about the topic yet. Seventy years on from the liberation of Auschwitz, the contributions collected in this volume each attempt, in various ways and from various perspectives, to trace the relationship between Nazi-occupied spaces and Holocaust memory, considering the multitude of ways in which the passing of time impacts upon, or shapes, cultural constructions of space. Accordingly, this volume does not consider topographies merely in relation to geographical landscapes but, rather, as markers of allusions and connotations that must be properly eked out. Since space and time are intertwined, if not, in fact, one and the same, an investigation of the spaces – the locations of horror – in relation to the passing of time might provide some manner of comprehension of one of the most troubling moments in human history. It is with this understanding of space, as fluid sites of memory that the contributors of this volume engage: these are the kind of shifting topographies that we are seeking to trace. The novelist, poet, and essayist W. G. Sebald (1944 – 2001) was perhaps the most original German writer of the last decade of the 20th century (“Die Ausgewanderten”, “Austerlitz”, “Luftkrieg und Literatur”).
