Following Edith Nesbit’s successful book “The Book of Dragon’s”, it was unfortunate she didn’t follow this up with a sequel. But look no further! John Halsted, author, publisher and folklorist has compiled “The Second Book of Dragons” using the many books in the Abela catalogue as his source. In this book you will find 28 illustrated tales of dragons and serpents drawn from the mists of time. Some are friendly dragons which provide wisdom and direction to the heroes of our stories. Others are downright wicked, oozing malice and evil, leaving the hero of the story no option but to engage the spiteful, fire-breathing, beast in battle. Our heroes always sally forth wilfully, but cautiously, engaging these ancient creatures to save a damsel in distress, or to save families, from what seems to be sure destruction. Herein you will find stories like: "The Deluded Dragon", "The Gypsy And The Dragon", "The Two Princes", "The Dragon Of Ghent", "The Magic Egg", "The Great Battle", "The Sword Gram And The Dragon Fafnir" and many, many more. These tales have been drawn from eighteen old and forgotten books and the thirty-three illustrations are by different artists bringing styles that are as different as the stories themselves.

In this second volume you will find a further 29 illustrated children’s stories by the master story-teller - Hans Christian Andersen. This present volume is the second of the selected stories from Hans Andersen. Together both books include what, out of a larger number, are the cream of Andersen’s “crop”. "The Ice Maiden", “The Little Mermaid” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes” set the standards for folklorists, authors and story-tellers worldwide and have all since become children’s classics. "The Sandhills of Jutland", another volume by Andersen, was pronounced by John Ruskin to be “the most perfect story” that he knew. The tales in this volume are: The Flax The Daisy The Pea Blossom The Storks The Wild Swans The Last Dream Of The Old Oak The Portuguese Duck The Snow Man The Farmyard Cock And The Weathercock The Red Shoes The Little Mermaid Buckwheat What Happened To The Thistle The Pen And The Inkstand The Teapot Soup From A Sausage Skewer What The Goodman Does Is Always Right The Old Street Lamp The Shepherdess And The Chimney Sweep The Drop Of Water The Swineherd The Metal Pig The Flying Trunk The Butterfly The Goblin And The Huckster Everything In Its Right Place The Real Princess The Emperor's New Clothes Great Claus And Little Claus The power of his tales to charm and elevate runs like a living thread through whatever he writes. In the two books, the first of which is presented here, they have met the tests and held an undiminishing popularity among the best children's books. They have set the standard, and their place in permanent literature will grow wider and more secure as time passes. Only a few children's authors will be ranked among the Immortals, and Hans Andersen is without a doubt one of them. It adds a charm to the little stories of these two volumes to know that the genial author travelled widely for a man of his time and everywhere he went he was urged to tell the tales himself. Even though he had become world famous, he did with equal measures of charm and grace in the kitchens of the humble and in the courts of nobles and palaces of kings. As was said in the preface to the first volume, wherever there are children, the stories of Hans Christian Andersen will be read and loved for a long time yet. =============== TAGS: Hans Andersen Fairy Tales, folklore, myths, legends, children’s stories, bedtime, fables, read, school children, homes, love to read, story-teller, imagination, sweet, sad, Flax, Daisy, Pea Blossom, Storks, Wild Swans, Last Dream, Old Oak, Portuguese Duck, Snow Man, Farmyard Cock, Weathercock, Red Shoes, Little Mermaid, Buckwheat, Thistle, Pen, Inkstand, Teapot, Soup, Sausage Skewer, Goodman, Right, Old Street Lamp, Shepherdess, Chimney Sweep, Drop Of Water, Swineherd, Metal Pig, Flying Trunk, Butterfly, Goblin, Huckster, Everything, Right Place, Real, Princess, Emperor's New Clothes, Great Claus, Little Claus

This is a book of 20 illustrated Russian folk and fairy tales retold for young people and the young at heart. The tales are a good sampling of Slavic folklore. The stories in this book are those that Russian peasants tell their children and each other. In this volume you will find the stories of Baba Yaga and the Girl with the Kind Heart, The Fool Of The World And The Flying Ship, The Cat Who Became Head-Forester, The Golden Fish, Salt, The Christening In The Village and many more. The seven colour plates and numerous black and white images make the visualisation of the characters, places and events much easier, especially for children. This is a book was compiled in far away Russia for children. Under the windows of the author’s house, the wavelets of the Volkhov River beat quietly in the dusk. A gold light burns on a timber raft floating down the river. Beyond the river in the blue midsummer twilight are the broad Russian plains and the distant forests of Novgorod. Somewhere in that forest of great trees is the hut where old Peter sits at night and tells these stories to his grandchildren. In Russia hardly anybody is too old for fairy stories, and the author even heard soldiers on their way to the front during WWI were overheard to be talking of very wise and very beautiful princesses as they drank their tea by the road side. Arthur Ransome, the compiler, knew there to be many more fairy stories in mother Russia than anywhere else in the world. In this book are a few of those he liked best. NOTE:The editor and compiler spent time in Russia during World War I as a journalist for a radical British newspaper, the Daily News, meeting among others, Lenin and Trotsky and was also known in the London bohemian artistic scene. These 38 Norwegian folk and fairy tales of elemental mountain, forest and sea spirits, have been handed down through the generations by hinds and huntsmen, woodcutters and fisher-folk, who led hard and lonely lives amid primitive surroundings are, perhaps, among the most fascinating the Scandinavian countries have to offer. Not only are they meant to delight children, and this they do not fail to do. “Grown-ups” who also, who take pleasure in a good story, will enjoy this book as well. Here you will find stories which are well told. Readers will enjoy the original legend of “Peer Gynt” as it existed before Ibsen gave it more symbolic meaning. You will also find a glowingly, beautiful picture of an Avalon of the Northern seas described in “The Island of Udröst.” And what could be more human and moving than the tragic “The Player on the Jew’s-Harp,” or none more genuinely entertaining than “The King’s Hares”? The thrill and fascination of black magic and mystery run through such stories as “The Secret Church,” “The Comrade,” and “Lucky Andrew.” In “The Honest Four-Shilling Piece” we have the adventures of a Norse Dick Whittington. “Storm Magic” is one of the most thrilling sea tales, bar none, ever written, but every story included in the volume seems to bring with it the breath of the Norse mountains. One cannot but believe that “The Book of Norwegian Fairy Tales” has an appeal for one and all, since it is a book in which fairy-tales mirror and reflect human yearnings and aspirations, human loves, ambitions and disillusionments, in an imaginatively festooned world. It is the translator’s hope that those who may come to know this book will derive as much pleasure from its reading as it gave him to translate it into English. In Russia, as elsewhere in the world, folklore is rapidly scattering before the practical spirit of modern progress. The traveling peasant bard or story teller, and the devoted "nyanya", the beloved nurse of many a generation, are rapidly dying out, and with them the tales and legends, the last echoes of a nation's early joys and sufferings, hopes and fears, are passing away. In this volume you will find the stories of: The Tsarevna Frog Seven Simeons The Language Of The Birds Ivanoushka The Simpleton Woe Bogotir Baba Yaga Dimian The Peasant The Golden Mountain Father Frost It is also accompanied by 10 full page pen and ink illustrations plus many finely crafted vignettes which bring the stories to life. The student of folk-lore knows that the time has come when haste is needed to catch these vanishing stories and songs of the nation's youth and to preserve them for the delight of future generations. In sending forth the stories in the present volume, all of which thankfully captured and down in print in this volume. It was the hope of the compiler that they may enable Western children to share with the children of Russia the pleasure of glancing into the magic world of the old Slavic nation. 10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities.

The existence of the Russian Skazki or Märchen (Stories, Folklore or Fairy Tales) was first made generally known to the British Public in about 1880 by William Ralston in his Russian Folk Tales. A year after the appearance of Ralston's book, the eminent Russian historian and archæologist, Peter Nikolaevich Polevoi selected, from the inexhaustible stores of Afanasiev, some three dozen of the Skazki (stories) most suitable for children, and worked them up into a fairy tale book which was published at St. Petersburg in 1874, under the title of Narodnuiya Russkiya Skazki (Popular Russian Stories). To manipulate these quaintly vigorous old world stories for nursery purposes was, no easy task, but, on the whole, M. Polevoi did his work excellently well, softening the crudities and smoothing out the occasional roughness, turning these charming stories into entirely readable stories for children. It is from the first Russian edition of M. Polevoi's book that the following selection of 24 Russian stories has been made. With the single exception of "Morozko," a variant of which may be familiar to those who know Mr. Ralston's volume. Some of the stories in this volume are: The Golden Mountain Morozko The Flying Ship The Story of the Tsarevich Ivan, and of The Harp that Harped Without A Harper The Story of Gore-Gorinskoe Go I Know Not Whither—Fetch I Know Not What Kuz’ma Skorobogaty The Tsarevna Loveliness-Inexhaustible Verlioka; and many more. As to the merits of these Skazki, they must be left to speak for themselves. So, we invite you to down this book of 24 unique Russian Fairy Tales and curl up in a comfy chair with a mug for of steaming hot chocolate and be whisked away to a country that is still as mysterious as it is large. 10% of the profit from the sale of this eBook will be donated to charities. ============ KEYWORDS/TAGS: Russian, Russia, Skazki, Folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, folk tales, story, children’s stories, bedtime, fables, culture, cultural, golden mountain, morozko, flying ship, muzhichek, big as your thumb, moustaches, seven versts, long, tsarevich ivan, harp gore gorinskoe, go, fetch, kuz’ma, Kuzma, skorobogaty, tsarevna, loveliness, inexhaustible, verlioka, frog, tsarevna, two sons, ivan, soldier, woman, accuser, Thomas, berennikov, white duck, little fool, little feather, fenist, bright falcon, peasant, demyan, enchanted, ring, brave, labourer, sage, damsel, prophetic, dream, two out, knapsack, marko the rich, vasily the luckless, R, Nisbet Bain, C.
