In this second volume in the series exploring Tumor Dormancy, Quiescence, and Cellular Senescence, discussion is focused on the role of tumor dormancy in diseases such as breast cancer, melanoma, prostate cancer, liver cancer and lung cancer. M. A. Hayat, the series editor, writes in the preface that little is known of factors regulating the transition of residual cancer into a dormant state or the subsequent reinitiation of growth. A majority of us, he says, have in situ tumors that may remain dormant or may progress into a lethal form of cancer; the former are prevented from recruiting their own blood supply. Section I covers Molecular Mechanisms, with chapters on the role of NAE inhibitor MLN4924; oncogene-induced senescence; the role played by mitogen-activated protein kinase in the induction of cellular senescence; mechanisms of premature cell senescence and other topics. Section II examines Tumor and Cancer, discussing defects in chromatin structure and diseases; the role of fibrosis in tumor progression and the dormant to proliferative switch; the function of ING proteins in cancer and senescence and more. The final section is devoted to Stem Cells and Cancer Stem Cells, featuring chapters showing that senescent-derived pluripotent stem cells are able to redifferentiate into fully rejuvenated cells; that the transcription factor Gata2 regulates quiescence in haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells; and discussing dormancy and recurrence of cancer stem cells in bone. The contributors point out that the quiescent state regulates hematopoietic stem cells and muscle stem cells, and detail the role of kinase in the mediation of reversible quiescent state in a subset of ovarian, pancreatic, and colon cancers. Molecular mechanisms underlying stress-induced cellular senescence and accumulation of reactive oxygen species and induction of premature senescence are also presented. Discussion includes the important role of microRNAs in oxidative stress-induced apoptosis and senescence and the effect of microRNA as a modulator of cell proliferation in lung cancer. The book includes an explanation of the suppression of cellular senescence in glioblastoma brain tumor. Taking a broad and varied perspective, this volume was written by 70 contributors representing 11 countries.

Relating Events in Narrative, Volume 2: Typological and Contextual Perspectives edited by Sven Strömqvist and Ludo Verhoeven, is the much anticipated follow-up volume to Ruth Berman and Dan Slobin's successful "frog-story studies" book, Relating Events in Narrative: A Crosslinguistic Developmental Study (1994). Working closely with Ruth Berman and Dan Slobin, the new editors have brought together a wide range of scholars who, inspired by the 1994 book, have all used Mercer Mayer's Frog, Where Are You? as a basis for their research. The new book, which is divided into two parts, features a broad linguistic and cultural diversity. Contributions focusing on crosslinguistic perspectives make up the first part of the book. This part is concluded by Dan Slobin with an analysis and overview discussion of factors of linguistic typology in frog-story research. The second part offers a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives, all dealing with contextual variation of narrative construction in a wide sense: variation across medium/modality (speech, writing, signing), genre variation (the specific frog story narrative compared to other genres), frog story narrations from the perspective of theory of mind, and from the perspective of bilingualism and second language acquisition. Several of the contributions to the new book manuscript also deal with developmental perspectives, but, in distinction to the 1994 book, that is not the only focused issue. The second part is initiated by Ruth Berman with an analysis of the role of context in developing narrative abilities. The new book represents a rich overview and illustration of recent advances in theoretical and methodological approaches to the crosslinguistic study of narrative discourse. A red thread throughout the book is that crosslinguistic variation is not merely a matter of variation in form, but also in content and aspects of cognition. A recurrent perspective on language and thought is that of Dan Slobin's theory of "thinking for speaking," an approach to cognitive consequences of linguistic diversity. The book ends with an epilogue by Herbert Clark, "Variations on a Ranarian Theme."

Writing About Animals In The Age Of Revolution written by Jane Spencer and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-06-10 with Literary Criticism categories.

What did British people in the late eighteenth century think and feel about their relationship to nonhuman animals? This book shows how an appreciation of human-animal similarity and a literature of compassion for animals developed in the same years during which radical thinkers were first basing political demands on the concept of natural and universal human rights. Some people began to conceptualise animal rights as an extension of the rights of man and woman. But because oppressed people had to insist on their own separation from animals in order to claim the right to a full share in human privileges, the relationship between human and animal rights was fraught and complex. This book examines that relationship in chapters covering the abolition movement, early feminism, and the political reform movement. Donkeys, pigs, apes and many other literary animals became central metaphors within political discourse, fought over in the struggle for rights and freedoms; while at the same time more and more writers became interested in exploring the experiences of animals themselves. We learn how children's writers pioneered narrative techniques for representing animal subjectivity, and how the anti-cruelty campaign of the early 1800s drew on the legacy of 1790s radicalism. Coleridge, Wordsworth, Clare, Southey, Blake, Wollstonecraft, Equiano, Dorothy Kilner, Thomas Spence, Mary Hays, Ignatius Sancho, Anna Letitia Barbauld, John Oswald, John Lawrence, and Thomas Erskine are just a few of the writers considered. Along with other canonical and non-canonical writers of many disciplines, they placed nonhuman animals at the heart of British literature in the age of the French Revolution.
