Présentée au musée des Arts décoratifs à Paris, l'exposition "Mutations" se propose d'explorer l'histoire des métiers d'art et d'affirmer leur singularité sous l'angle de l'objet, de la création, de la technique et de la matière. Neuf pièces ont été commandées à des collectifs d'artistes contemporains (artisans et ateliers d'art, designers, plasticiens) pour répondre à neuf pièces des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles des collections du musée des Arts décoratifs. Ils se sont emparés de la pierre, de la terre, du bois, du verre, du cuir, du papier, du métal et du textile pour livrer respectivement leur interprétation des thématiques de la matière, du geste, de l'usage, de la forme, de l'ornement, du décor, des sens et de l'art. Une place particulière est réservée à un objet emblématique du musée, le hanap "Les métiers d'art" de Lucien Falize, présenté à l'Exposition universelle de 1900, et à son interprétation contemporaine. Chacune de ces oeuvres, anciennes et contemporaines, sont présentées dans le catalogue pour lequel elles ont fait l'objet d'une commande photographique spéciale. Page après page, les photographies des oeuvres des collections du musée des Arts décoratifs, celles des pièces contemporaines, celles de décors du musée et extérieurs, complétées par des photographies d'inspirations notamment puisées dans la nature, jouent de leur proximité visuelle. Il s'agit d'un livre objet résolument contemporain, se présentant sous forme de 10 cahiers comportant chacun trois papiers, jouant sur les matières, les textures et les transparences pour faire sentir au lecteur à la fois visuellement et tactilement la notion de mutation. Organized by the REHSEIS group (Research on Epistemology and History of Exact Sciences and Scientific Institutions) of CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), the colloquium was held from 3 to 6 April 1990 in the UNESCO building in Paris. This colloquium was an idea of Professor Roshdi Rashed who initiated this field of studies in France some years ago, and proposed "Sciences and Empires" as one of the main research programmes for the The project to organize such a colloquium was a bit REHSEIS group. of a gamble. Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently. The terminology was strongly debated by the participants and, as is frequently suggested in this book, awaits fuller clarification.

This background paper analyzes technologies for tomorrow's information superhighways. Advanced networks will first be used to support scientists in their work, but will soon be deployed more widely in business, entertainment, health care, and education. Significant progress has been made toward the development of gigabit network technology since the basic characteristics of the design of broadband networks began to emerge in the mid-1980s. No insurmountable technological barriers to the gigabit National Research and Education Network (NREN) appear to exist, as work in the testbeds (i.e., initial testing programs) is demonstrating. Testbed networks model the configuration in which the technology is expected to be deployed, in that test sites are separated by realistic distances and realistic technological applications will be used. Testbed applications research helps researchers understand how the NREN can be used to achieve science goals and as a testbed in itself, demonstrating technology that can be deployed more widely. The following topics are reviewed: (1) the Internet; (2) broadband network technology; (3) gigabit research; and (4) application of testbed research.
