The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist church is based on fundamental biblical absolutes that are not contingent on cultural, ideological or geographic context. On the converse the postmodern and secular worldview thrive on the relativity of truth and values. Adventism cannot be reclusive nor exclusive to the postmodern and secular mindset due to the incessant influence they exert on societal values and moorings. Society today is virtually controlled in every sphere by the postmodern agenda. While the mission of Adventism mandates that it reaches every ideological mindset, at the same time it is incumbent on Adventism to remain biblically adept and contextually relevant without being syncretistic. The country of Grenada known for its relative conservative nature can provide insights as to the pervasiveness of the postmodern outlook. This work proposes that Adventism must embrace the challenge of the postmodern and secular mindset, discretely engaging some of the negotiable elements within postmodernism, while concomitantly ensuring that biblical truths remain uncompromised

This book explores the interrelation of literacy and religion as practiced by Western Christians in, first, historical contexts and, second, in one contemporary church setting. Using both a case study and a Foucauldian theoretical framework, the book provides a sustained analysis of the reciprocal discursive construction of literacy, religiosity and identity in one Seventh-day Adventist Church community of Northern Australia. Critical linguistic and discourse analytic theory is used to disclose processes of theological (church), familial (home) and educational (school) normalisation of community members into regulated ways of hearing and speaking, reading and writing, being and believing. Detailed analyses of spoken and written texts taken from institutional and local community settings show how textual religion is an exemplary technology of the self, a politics constituted by canonical texts, interpretive norms, textual practices, ritualised events and sociopolitical protocols that, ultimately, are turned in upon the self. The purpose of these analyses is to show how, across denominational difference in belief (tradition) and practice, particular versions of self and society are constructed through economies of truth from text that constrain what can and cannot be articulated and enacted by believers.

My book's objective is to describe the beliefs, practices, and ventures of the Adventist church that have had or still have a significant impact on my life. Looking back, I now have a better understanding why ancient Israel was repeatedly told to remember what God had done for them. For this reason, there will be much reminiscing, retelling of personal experiences, and evaluating church teachings and decisions, all in the endeavor to make sense of what has happened. That can only take place if we bathe our words and expressions in grace, love and understanding. The book endeavors to answer the underlying question: what do we mean when we use the term "church"? What are the primary reasons for its existence? When you ask Adventists such a question, we hope they answer with a reply that is inspiring and practical. In presenting my view of Adventism over the past seventy-five years, it's had a positive effect on my knowing and understanding Jesus-and I hope the same goes for you!
