See One. Do One. Teach One provides a series of 12 engaging lessons for GCSE English pupils, with a particular focus on CCEA specification. The lessons have been created for pupils of all abilities and are based on tried and tested methods within a classroom setting. Pupils learn through direct observation of each task. Each lesson will act as a springboard for NQTs or can provide an opportunity to review and refresh teaching approaches for GCSE English Language. Using Rosenshine's Principles for Instruction, the book primarily focuses on direct instruction and scaffolding, live modelling and annotation, and further opportunities to act on feedback using extension tasks. Pupils 'see' an example in action delivered by an expert; 'do' by completing a related task under the supervision of their teacher; and finally they 'teach' one another by using carefully constructed questions for micro teaching. Teaching the skill or task helps reinforce the knowledge learned and helps the student develop even further toward mastery. The 'Teach One' section includes structured questions to develop vital GCSE recall and oracy skills. Pupils work together to complete independent reading and writing tasks.

It could happen at 10:10 a.m. in the midst of analyzing a text, at 2:00, when listening to a students’ debate, or even after class, when planning a lesson. The question arises: How do I influence students’ learning–what’s going to generate that light bulb Aha-moment of understanding? In this sequel to their megawatt best seller Visible Learning for Literacy, Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey, and John Hattie help you answer that question by sharing structures and tools that have high-impact on learning, and insights on which stage of learning they have that high impact. With their expert lessons, video clips, and online resources, you can design reading and writing experiences that foster in your students deeper and more sophisticated expressions of literacy: Mobilizing Visible Learning: Use lesson design strategies based on research that included 500 million plus students to develop self-regulating learners able to "see" the purpose of what they are learning—and their own progress. Teacher Clarity: Articulate daily learning intentions, success criteria, and other goals; understand what your learners understand, and design high-potency experiences for all students. Direct Instruction: Embrace modeling and scaffolding as a critical pathway for students to learn new skills and concepts. Teacher-Led Dialogic Instruction: Guide reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking by using strategic questioning and other teacher-led discussion techniques to help learners to clarify thinking, discuss, debate, and goal-set. Student-Led Dialogic Learning: Promote intellectual, social, and creative growth with peer-mediated learning experiences that transfer to other subject areas, including history, science, math, and the visual and performing arts. Independent Learning: Ensure that students deepen learning by designing relevant tasks that enable them to think metacognitively, set goals, and develop self-regulatory skills. Tools to Use to Determine Literacy Impact: Know what your impact truly is with these research-based formative assessments for 6-12 learners. With Teaching Literacy in the Visible Learning Classroom, take your students from surface to deep to transfer learning. It’s all about using the most effective practices—and knowing WHEN those practices are best leveraged to maximize student learning.

Most books on teaching ask teachers to be inspirational, to operate at 100 miles an hour with creativity oozing out of every pore. Dominic Salles says that's unsustainable. But you can get brilliant results using some simple practices taken from the myriad of educational research on classroom practices. It isn't a guide to all the extra stuff you should do to become cool and awesome. It is a book that will get you to forget about teaching and think about learning: another way of saying, it will help you to stop stressing about what you do, and get the students to work harder and smarter at what they do. Dominic Salles believes that every teacher can be slightly awesome. And here he shows you how.

The Committee's report examines science and mathematics teaching in secondary schools in England, focusing on the following issues: the take-up of science and mathematics at GCSE and A-level, the provision of careers advice to students, problems in the recruitment and retention of teachers, the quality of teaching methods and the role of continuing professional development. The Committee finds that effective science teaching in schools is essential, both in order to ensure a satisfactory general level of scientific literacy in society, and to enable the next generation of scientists and engineers to progress into higher education and beyond. It argues that the current examination system forces students to study an excessively narrow range of subjects at too early an age, and it recommends that the Government should reconsider the Tomlinson proposals for a broader diploma-based system for 14-19 year old students based on the International Baccalaureate. This would ensure that students receive a more rounded education and are not made to over-specialise before they are able to see the merits of studying science and mathematics. Concerns are also raised about the shortage of science teachers, particularly specialist physics and chemistry teachers, the quality of careers advice in schools, and the importance of practical science in schools.
