The contributors to this zine highlight the many ways in which the Paradise Hotel and its precursors had local, cultural, social and historical significance to the Norfolk Island community. Their stories point to the value of the Paradise as a twentieth-century heritage place in the Pitcairn Settlement which, if it were still standing, may today have been afforded the kinds of protections and respect that were bestowed on the penal settlement buildings of Quality Row. The zine makes clear that the Paradise site held a dynamic, vital place in the heart of the Norfolk Island community. It was a home for its managers' children and numerous employees, as well as a home away from home for tourists. It was a venue to dance and listen to live music. It was a place to work, to meet up with friends and family, to find love, but also for mischief and fights. Even in being dismantled, its material remnants became repurposed in homes across Norfolk Island. In both material and symbolic ways, the Paradise lives on.

For what you ask? It wasn’t drug related. It all started in 1983, when I was hit by a car. Paralyzing my left side, it goes back that far. I died 3 times, my life was robbed. It was a miracle I lived, by the grace of God! Just like a nightmare and tragedy, it was a terrible sight! I wasn’t drunk driving, I was riding a bike! I went through the front window, and out the back. It was a 1983, Cadillac! I stayed in a coma for 6 weeks. The day they pulled the plug, I awoke from sleep! I couldn’t even walk, but I was so determined. I lost a third of my memory, I had a will for learning. I got married the same year, to a beautiful woman! As time went by, the memories kept coming! I went to college, as part of my rehabilitation. I was starting a family, so I had to increase my education! Even though I only had the use of one hand It made me more determined, to be a man! With all I had been through, I wasn’t delirious. Every one of my responsibilities, I took serious! Here is something the doctors stated. If I had used any drugs, I never! Would’ve made it. I went through hell and hot water, and I proved I was able. Though I took care of my family, my wife was unfaithful! Since my accident, I have been butchered and slaughtered!! Though she was unfaithful, she got my two sons and one daughter. Without my kids, I got no lovin. It’s not the fact that she cheated, she cheated with my cousin! She even married him, and that’s when I really started drinking. I should’ve trusted in Jehovah (God) but, I was way beyond thinking! And now, I’m doing time for something, that I’m totally against. I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place, with my back against the fence! It’s been pure hell! And I’ve had enough. I’m living for my kids, so, I can’t give up! The book is a fiction; it deals with Legal, political, economic and social ills plaguing most developing countries that are still grappling with various developmental challenges. There are some developing countries especially in Africa where there is failure of leadership. This fuels ethnic, religious and socials upheavals which lead to political instability and even wars. In some of these countries, there is corruption of monumental proportion which slows down economic development and this may eventually lead to other social problems such as poverty, chaos, anarchy etc. The book politely and humorously point out these problems and the way forward. Corruption is a global problem but the book also propounds a theory that corruption in large scale by a political leadership in any country may lead to economic problem that could cause extermination of the poor masses gradually through hunger, preventable and curable diseases and that such corruption should be treated as "massocide" and as crime against humanity by the UNO. The book also highlights the problem of unsuitability of some political arrangement of some developing countries that is also responsible for the political, social and economic problems plaguing them; and the need to have national dialogue to arrive at the best political arrangement which is indeed the foundation to build on. The outcome of such national dialogue should be implemented and use to draft a new constitution. The book humorously highlights the flight of integrity from some of these developing countries due to the bad example from leadership. When corruption is the order of the day and there is impunity in that no one is punished even when caught, it makes many people to join the bandwagon and hell is then let loose on the society. Some lawyers when well paid by corrupt officials; they would do all within their powers and explore legal loopholes and processes to either ensure that such cases drag to eternity in law courts or are never heard. Due to the legal procedure that presume an accused person innocent until convicted in law courts, the corrupt official going through trial in court would be free to pursue his/her political ambition, get elected into any political office and acquire more money to frustrate his/her trial in law court. This book highlights the foregoing too. The book highlights the social ills plaguing many developing countries which reduce most human beings to subsistence level and in such situation; higher human ideals are sacrificed on altar of expediency to survive. Even the zeal to work hard and excel wane in many people as the economic climate favours those with political powers and their cohorts; in such a situation everyone struggles to get to political power through any means. It becomes "a do or die" affair. The book will appeal to the public at large especially those who are interested in finding solutions to the problems affecting the developing countries.
