Although most Arab countries remain authoritarian, many have undergone a restructuring of state-society relations in which lower- and middle-class interest groups have lost ground while big business has benefited in terms of its integration into policy-making and the opening of economic sectors that used to be state-dominated. Arab businesses have also started taking on aspects of public service provision in health, media and education that used to be the domain of the state; they have also become increasingly active in philanthropy. The ‘Arab Spring,’ which is likely to lead to a more pluralistic political order, makes it all the more important to understand business interests in the Middle East, a segment of society that on the one hand has often been close to the ancien regime, but on the other will play a pivotal role in a future social contract. Among the topics addressed by the authors are the role of business in recent regime change; the political outlook of businessmen; the consequences of economic liberalisation on the composition of business elites in the Middle East; the role of the private sector in orienting government policies; lobbying of government by business interests and the mechanisms by which governments seek to keep businesses dependent on them.

The objective of chapter is to understand management of innovation in micro, small and medium enterprises in MENA region. Traditionally, MENA region includes following countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and United Arab Emirates. The aim of the countries of the MENA region has been to achieve better economic growth and development. And for this, they understand that they have to get rid of tag of 'Rentier State'. This is only possible through focusing on innovative practices. One study reveals that innovation culture is active and organizations have made innovation strategies for long-term period in MENA region.Through active innovation culture, organizations adopt best practices. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises have a very high share of private sector employment in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), particularly in countries with large informal sectors. According to official statistics, they account for 10 to 40 percent of all employment. Number of start-ups has also increased around eight times in 2011 as compared to 2005 in MENA region. There is potential in a small proportion of high performing MSMEs to catapult into internationally competitive companies. This can generate employment, and economic stability (Nasr and Pearce, 2012). But MSMEs, however, face many barriers in this transition. They suffer from operational, financial problems in competing with large enterprises. Addressing these challenges to MSME growth and competitiveness is central to overcoming employment and economic development challenges in the region. Given all the barriers, MSMEs must be able to manage their innovation practices in order to stay competitive. They should take advantage of growing innovation culture in MENA. The chapter highlights some of the innovation management techniques to be adopted by these MSMEs in MENA region.

The popular uprisings in 2011 that overthrew Arab dictators were also a rebuke to crony capitalism, diverted against both rulers and their allied businessmen who monopolize all economic opportunities. While the Middle East has witnessed a growing nexus between business and politics in the wake of liberalization, little is discussed about the nature of business cronies, the sectors in which they operate, the mechanisms used to favour them, and the possible impact of such crony relations on the region's development. Combining inputs from leading scholars in the field, Crony Capitalism in the Middle East: Business and Politics from Liberalization to the Arab Spring presents a wealth of empirical evidence on the form and function of this aspect of the region. Crony Capitalism in the Middle East is unique in both its empirical focus and comparative scale. Analysis in individual chapters is empirically grounded and based on fine-grained data on the business activities of politically connected actors furnishing, for the first time, information on the presence, numerical strength, and activities of politically connected entrepreneurs. It also substantially enhances our understanding of the mechanisms used to privilege connected businesses, and their possible impact on undermining the growth of firms in the region. It offers a major advance on our prior knowledge of Middle Eastern political economy, and constitutes a distinct contribution to the global literature on crony capitalism and the politics of development. The book will be an essential resource for students, researchers, and policymakers alike.
