Segregation is a pervasive phenomenon whereby a flowing granular mass consisting of particles with diverse physical properties becomes spatially inhomogeneous. In the industrial sector that deals with the handling and processing of bulk solids, this non-uniformity is highly undesirable since blend homogeneity is generally a stringent requirement of most products. In the arena of geophysical flows, segregation can enhance the destructive capabilities of natural events such as avalanches and landslides. During the last 15 years, these issues have provided motivation and fostered collaborations between the communities of mathematicians, engineers, industrial researchers, and physicists to develop predictive models of segregation by integrating the perspectives and approaches of each. The collection of unique papers brings to light many of the perplexing scientific and technical issues in our current understanding of this complex phenomenon. It addresses advances in experiment, computational modeling and theory. This volume is one of the very few books devoted entirely to problems of segregation of particulate solids.

Segregation in Vibrated Granular Systems explains the individual mechanisms that influence the segregation of granular media under vibration, along with their interactions. Drawing on research from a wide range of academic disciplines, the book focuses on vibrated granular systems that are used in industry, providing a guide that will solve practical problems and help researchers. The applications of vibration-based segregation in industries, including pharmaceuticals, mining, food and chemical processing are all investigated with appropriate examples. In addition, relevant theory behind the behavior of granular media and segregation processes is explained, along with investigations of the technologies and techniques used. Analyzes all phenomena involved in the vibration-based segregation of bulk solids, including those relating to size, material properties and shape Explores how different segregation mechanisms interact Compares different technologies for investigating granular media, including PIV, MRI and X-ray tomography Explains how to use computational techniques to model the behavior of granular media, including DM, CFD and FEM

This book is a systematic introduction to a new and exciting field of patterns in granular matter. Granular materials are collections of discrete macroscopic solid grains with a typical size large enough that thermal fluctuations are negligible. Despite this seeming simplicity, properties of granular materials are different from conventional solids, liquids and gases due to the dissipative and highly nonlinear nature of forces among grains. The last decade has seen an explosion of interest to nonequilibrium phenomena in granular matter among physicists, both on the experimental and theoretical side. Among these phenomena, one of the most interesting is the ability of granular matter upon mechanical excitation to form highly ordered patterns such as ripples, avalanches, or bands of segregated materials. This book presents a comprehensive review of experiments and novel theoretical concepts needed to understand the mechanisms of pattern formation in granular materials. This book is written for experienced physicists interested in this new rapidly developing field, as well as young researchers and graduate students entering this field. We hope that both experimentalists and theorists already working in the field will find it useful.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the development of longitudinal stripes of granular particles due to instabilities in particle suspension flow. Research was conducted to characterize environmental phenomena related to granular flows, namely avalanches, mudslides, and the movement of glaciers. Results show the stripes were found to appear with a particle concentration of 10% by volume at angles of 20 degrees, at a particle concentration of 20% and 30% by volume at 20, 30, and 40 degrees, and at a particle concentration for 40% by volume at 20 degrees. The application of a shear stress intensified the development of the instabilities, and in experimental trials where stripes were not initially seen, the application of a shear stress was able to induce the fluid to develop the instability.

This book is an account on the thermomechanical behaviour of granular and porous materials and deals with experiments, theoretical deduction of macroscale equations by means of averaging from microscale properties, embedding the macroscopic description into a continuum-thermodynamical and statistical context and analysis of solutions of macroscopic models by numerical techniques. It addresses itself to engineers (chemical, civil, mechanical) applied mathematicians and physicists at the advanced student or Ph. D. level at universities, research centres and in industry.
