English summary: Emotions, feelings, affects and passions are central to human life. Without passions, we cannot live in a humane way, but passions can also hinder and destroy human relationships. It is important, therefore, that our passions are shaped by cultural forms but also that we control these cultural formations critically because they can become destructive. To allow our cultural forms to repress passions is as much detrimental to living a humane life as to live passions in a selfish way. Ingolf U. Dalferth's thesis is not that we must repress our passions but that we must avoid living them selfishly, and that we must not cultivate our selfishness but our passions.

Hope As Atmosphere written by Xu Wang and has been published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-11 with Religion categories.

In this thesis, the phenomenon of fundamental hope is understood as atmosphere. As a metaphor, hope as atmosphere finds a new expression of hope other than the light-metaphor that dominates the discourse of hope. Hope is not only the light that illuminates the dark moments of life, but also, more fundamentally, in the air, it lies in the sphere in-between and saturates each life experience and every living moment. As an existential reality, hope as atmosphere reveals our hopeful way of atmospheric co-existence. Communal love constitutes the ground of this hopeful co-existence, it keeps the hopeful co-existence constantly refreshed and open, guaranteeing more possibilities of hope. On the basis of communal love, hopeful co-existence shows its ontological meaning as a way towards life. The thesis of hope as atmosphere finds resonance and expression not only in Christian trinitarianly based understanding of hope, but also in the most central doctrine of co-humanity in Confucianism.

Elasticized Ecclesiology written by Ulrich Schmiedel and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-17 with Religion categories.

This study confronts the current crisis of churches. In critical and creative conversation with the German theologian Ernst Troeltsch (1865-1923), Ulrich Schmiedel argues that churches need to be “elasticized” in order to engage the “other.” Examining contested concepts of religiosity, community, and identity, Schmiedel explores how the closure of church against the sociological “other” corresponds to the closure of church against the theological “other.” Taking trust as a central category, he advocates for a turn in the interpretation of Christianity—from “propositional possession” to “performative project,” so that the identity of Christianity is “done” rather than “described.” Through explorations of classical and contemporary scholarship in philosophy, sociology, and theology, Schmiedel retrieves Troeltsch’s interdisciplinary thinking for use in relation to the controversies that encircle the construction of community today. The study opens up innovative and instructive approaches to the investigation of the practices of Christianity, past and present. Eventually, church emerges as a “work in movement,” continually constituted through encounters with the sociological and the theological “other.”

God As Sacrificial Love written by Asle Eikrem and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-25 with Religion categories.

In dialogue with a range of post-enlightenment critiques of Christian theologies regarding sacrificial love, Asle Eikrem presents an unconventional systematic approach to this multi-layered and complex theological topic. From Hegel to prominent 20th century theologians, from feminist theologies to postmodern philosophers, this volume engages in a critical conversation with a host of different voices on all the classical topics in theology (creation, trinity, incarnation, atonement, sin, faith, sacraments, and eschatology), also providing a moral and socio-historical vision for Christian living. The result is a unique appraisal of the significance that the life and death of Jesus holds for the world today.

A Prominent Theologian Explores What It Means to Be Human Preeminent scholar and theologian Ingolf Dalferth offers mature reflections on what it means to be human, a topic at the forefront of contemporary Christian thought. Dalferth argues that humans should be defined not as deficient beings--who must compensate for the weaknesses of their biological nature by means of technology, morals, media, religion, and culture--but as creatures of possibility. He understands human beings by reference to their capacity to live a truly humane life. Dalferth explores the sheer gratuitousness of God's agency in justifying and sanctifying the human person, defining humans not by what we do or achieve but by God's creative and saving action. In the gospel, we are set free to interact with the world and creation.

In Rethinking the Medieval Legacy for Contemporary Theology, six distinguished theologians bridge medieval and contemporary theologies by developing the theological significance of medieval insights in response to contemporary issues. Their nuanced readings of medieval texts, extended to major theological issues of our time, provide examples of the retrieval of the medieval tradition, an essential part of any contemporary theological reconstruction. Barbara Newman extends the theology of perichoresis or mutual indwelling to illuminate the relationship between donor and recipient in the case of organ transplants; Marilyn McCord Adams applies insights about divine friendship to the perennial issue of horrendous evil; and Kevin Madigan brings principles of medieval exegesis to bear on the contemporary historical critical approach to biblical interpretation. Ingolf U. Dalferth applies insights from the doctrine of divine omnipotence and creation ex nihilo to deconstruct Heidegger’s limitation of the possibilities of authentic existence to historical facticity. Pim Valkenberg explores the possibilities of a theological encounter between Christianity and Islam in the works of Aquinas and Nicholas of Cusa; and Anselm K. Min applies the analogical insights of Aquinas on the nature and limits of human knowledge of God to a critique of contemporary theologies that claim to know either too little or too much about God.

The Implicit Theology Of The Lord S Prayer written by Jan Muis and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-01-15 with Religion categories.

The postmodern and secular culture of the West requires a new reflection on God. The Implicit Theology of the Lord’s Prayer: A Biblical and Theological Investigation reflects on God on the basis of an original and central expression of the Christian faith: the Lord’s Prayer. First, Jan Muis interprets the divine names central to this prayer in their biblical contexts. Next, Muis understands the divine attributes implied by these names from the biblical narrative of God’s self-revealing actions, and explains them in a contemporary framework. God’s Name indicates his particular personal presence and encounter with human beings. The holiness of God’s Name and the justice of his Kingship are more than just aspects of the love of the Father, the Son, and the Spirit. The Creator is not a human blown large; in his companionship with humans, he remains the Exalted who lives both “within” and “beyond” created, temporal reality. In the context of “a secular age,” Muis discusses in what sense this God exists.

"Sabine Joy Ihben-Bahl beschäftigt sich in dieser Untersuchung mit der Bedeutung von Angst. Indem sie neue Erkenntnisse zur Angst aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen mit dem Angstbegriff des Theologen Paul Tillich zusammenbringt, entwickelt sie eine Angsttheorie, deren Pointe es ist, dass diese Emotion die Wirklichkeit des Menschen abbildet und letztlich auf diejenige Gottes verweist." --provided by publisher, back cover

Ethik Der Liebe written by Lukas Ohly and has been published by Evangelische Verlagsanstalt this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-01 with Religion categories.

[Ethics of Love. Lectures on Intimacy ans Friendship] Christian speech of love usually ignores its ambivalence: Instead, love is either praised as a divine gift, or condemned due to its abnormality. This book describes love as a pre-moral bond between people, which urges them to search for ethical orientation. The theological character of love firstly consists in experiencing love like a revelation and secondly in the perpetual bond of partnership, which even outlasts separation. From this ambivalence of love its ethical challenge arises. Thus, the theological character of love constitutes its ethical obligations. In this way, several kinds and states of love, friendship and sexual relationships can be ethically evaluated. This book discusses alternative interpretations of love in theology and human science.
