Perpetration and Complicity under Nazism and Beyond analyses perpetration and complicity under National Socialism and beyond. Contributors based in the UK, the USA, Canada, Germany, Israel and Chile reflect on self-understandings, representations and narratives of involvement in collective violence both at the time and later a topic that remains highly relevant today. Using the notion of 'compromised identities' to think about contentious questions relating to empathy and complicity, this inter-disciplinary collection addresses the complex relationships between people's behaviours and self-understandings through and beyond periods of collective violence. Contributors explore the compromises that individuals, states and societies enter into both during and after such violence. Case studies highlight patterns of complicity and involvement in perpetration, and analyse how people's stories evolve under changing circumstances and through social interaction, using varying strategies of justification, denial and rationalisation. Each chapter also considers the ways in which contemporary responses and scholarly practices may be affected by engagement with perpetrator representations.

The Nazi regime had far-reaching ideas about how the individual should think and act. In "A Third Reich, as I See It" Janosch Steuwer examines the private diaries of ordinary Germans written between 1933 and 1939 and shows how average citizens reacted to the challenges of National Socialism. Some felt the urge and desire to adapt to the political circumstances. Others felt compelled to do so. They all contributed to the realization of the vision of a homogeneous, conflict-free, and "racially pure" society. Eine Karriere in zwei Systemen: Leben und Wirken des Wolfsburg-Planers Peter Koller im Nationalsozialismus und in der Bundesrepublik. Der Architekt und Stadtplaner Peter Koller (1907-1996) ist eine der schillerndsten und umstrittensten Figuren der Wolfsburger Stadtgeschichte. Als Protegé Albert Speers erhielt er 1937 den Auftrag zur Planung der Volkswagenstadt. Im NS-Staat betreute Koller dank seiner Kontakte zu prominenten Nationalsozialisten wie Speer und DAF-Führer Robert Ley zahlreiche weitere Bauvorhaben, darunter die Neugestaltungsplanungen für die Gauhauptstädte Graz und Innsbruck. Trotz dieser Verbindung zur NS-Elite setzte er seine Karriere nach Kriegsende nahezu ungebrochen fort. Der Rat der Stadt Wolfsburg wählte ihn 1955 zum Stadtbaurat, im Jahr 1960 folgte seine Berufung auf den Lehrstuhl für Städtebau an der TU Berlin. Nach seiner Emeritierung nahm Koller als Zeitzeuge Einfluss auf die Erforschung der Architektur- und Stadtplanungsgeschichte während des Nationalsozialismus. In dieser ersten kritischen Biografie erkundet Marcel Glaser die Netzwerke, Handlungsspielräume und Wandlungsprozesse im Leben Peter Kollers. Zugleich zeigt er, wie die völkischen Neuordnungspläne des NS-Regimes Stadtplaner in Kontakt mit Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaftlern brachten – dies führte zu einer methodologischen Erweiterung des Faches, die schließlich in der modernen Disziplin Stadtplanung mündete.

Die Alltags-, die Sozial- und die Frauengeschichte suchten darin ab den 1980er-Jahren Spuren individueller Lebensgeschichten. Seither sind umfangreiche Sammlungen entstanden, die heute eine ausdifferenzierte Auto/Biografieforschung ermöglichen. Li Gerhalter nimmt als Akteur/innen dieser vielseitigen Geschichte neben Wissenschafter/innen und Sammler/innen auch jene Personen in den Blick, die Tagebücher zur Verfügung gestellt haben. Mit diesem Buch über die facettenreiche Tagebuchforschung gibt sie Einblicke in zeitgebundene Forschungspraktiken. Since 1800 diaries have been in the centre of scientific research. This can be observed repeatedly in the beginnings of new disciplines. The aims of the scholars were various: both the early childhood research of the 19th century and the adolescent psychology from 1920 built significant theses on ›normal processes‹ of the human development upon personal testimonies. Since the 1980s scholars from the disciplines of Alltagsgeschichte, social and women history examined traces of individual biographies. Since then, comprehensive collections have been created which enable a differentiated auto-/biography research. Li Gerhalter not only focuses on actors of this various history but also on scholars, collectors and people who provided these diaries. With this book she gives insights in the manifold diary research and time-dependent research methods.
