This edition of Grimm’s Fairy Tales contains thirty-six tales, selected by Elenore Abbott and decorated with her stunning colour, and black-and-white illustrations. Included, are such well-known and loved stories as ‘The Frog Prince’, ‘Hansel and Gretel’, ‘The Valiant Little Tailor’, ‘Cinderella’, ‘Snow White’, ‘Rumpelstiltskin’ and ‘Briar Rose’. It is a book to be enjoyed by both young and old, a beautiful example of literary and artistic endeavour. The Brothers Grimm (or Die Brüder Grimm), Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859), were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, lexicographers and authors – who together specialized in collecting and publishing folklore during the nineteenth century. The popularity of the ‘Grimm’s Fairy Tales’ has endured well; they have been translated into more than 100 languages, and remain in print in the present day. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.

This is meant to be the best collection attainable of that delight of all children, and of many grown people who retain the child-heart still-the old-fashioned, time-honoured classic Fairy-tale. It has been compiled from all sources-far-off and familiar; when familiar, the stories have been traced with care to their original form, which, if foreign, has been re-translated, condensed, and in any other needful way made suitable for modern British children. Perrault, Madame d'Aulnois, and Grimm have thus been laid under contribution. Where it was not possible to get at the original of a tale, its various versions have been collated, compared, and combined; and in some instances, where this still proved unsatisfactory, the whole story has been written afresh. The few real old English fairy tales, such as Jack the Giant-Killer, Tom Thumb, etc., whose authorship is lost in obscurity, but whose charming Saxon simplicity of style, and intense realism of narration, make for them an ever-green immortality-these have been left intact; for no later touch would improve them. All modern stories have been excluded. Of course, in fairy tales instruction is not expected-we find there only the rude moral of virtue rewarded and vice punished. But children will soon discover for themselves that in real life all beautiful people are not good, nor all ugly ones wicked; that every elder sister is not ungenerous, nor every stepmother cruel. The tender young heart is often reached as soon by the imagination as by the intellect: and without attempting any direct appeal to either reason or conscience, the Editor of this Collection has been especially careful that it should contain nothing which could really harm a child. She therefore trusts that, whatever its defects, this Fairy Book will not deserve a criticism, almost the sharpest that can be given to any work-"that it would have been better if the author had taken more pains.

Selected Fairy Tales written by Barbara Leonie Picard and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Fairy tales categories.

Distinguished author Barbara Leonie Picard says that during World War II she sought to "forget the sad war days by writing fairy tales: simply because I had always liked fairy tales." After the war, she continued to create stories full of adventure and romance and tinged with melancholy in the best tradition of storytellers of old. Now, in this new book, she has chosen her favorites to be gathered together for the first time. The Sea King's Daughter--the first fairy tale Ms. Picard ever wrote--is a concise and masterful tale of a prince, his new bride, and a scorned and powerful maiden from the sea. Promises are made and broken, and the prince learns the price true love demands. In Count Alaric's Lady a young man discovers that his lady is not from his world, but from that of the "fairy people." Only by offering her a perfect love will he keep her by his side. Little Lady Margaret lives a lonely life that promises to get only gloomier until she learns to weave herself into her needlepoint tapestry. These stories and 13 others, full of magic and wonder, are distinguished by Ms. Picard's gracefully simple prose and by the exquisite black and white line drawings of Julia Cobbold. This is a collection that will charm readers of all ages.
