Mate selection is the second most important decision we make in life! This decision determines whether our life will be blessed and full of joy or if it will be a painful calamity. If it is a calamity, then it will bring disastrous effects on us, our mate, our children, and our extended family and friends. Who can best guide us through this decision? Parents frequently convey to their children that the only criteria for success in mate selection and marriage are money and education. Parents want their children to excel in marriage, but they give their children no specialized training or emphasis on preparing their lives and being the kind of person who can secure a godly mate and maintain a permanent, lasting relationship. I see churches striving to attract youths and young adults to the church. I see churches challenging youths to be exceptional in their faithfulness to Jesus. I want to see churches teaching teenagers and young adults to be intimate with one another while maintaining sexual purity. I want to see churches teaching youths how to build the skills that will make them an excellent mate and future parent. I want to see churches teaching youths and young adults how to find healing for the pains that are destroying their lives. I see churches teaching that God demands holiness, and I want to see them teaching that holiness is the most enjoyable, beneficial, and only lifestyle that can and will bring permanence to all of our relationships, including marriage.

In "Man, Woman and Marriage", noted experts discuss such subjects as the ways in which people choose their mates, how the family social system can entrap its members in neurotic "games," and the complex nature of marital love. Each of the essays has been significant in major controversies on family research and represents a progressive exploration of the "psychosocial" aspects of marriage and family life in the United States.Alan L. Grey's penetrating Introduction traces the history of family research, reviews earlier theories of social interaction, discusses typical research approaches, and furnishes a stimulating commentary on each paper that enumerates the key ideas and themes most relevant to the main emphasis of the debate. Representative of the variety of viewpoints highlighted in this book are the pioneer efforts of Robert F. Winch and his co-workers, and the critical evaluations by George Levinger and Roland G. Tharp as they point out the numerous complexities of the interpersonal process. At the same time, Gerald Bauman and his co-workers demonstrate the use of more flexible and sensitive research devices, Melvin Cohen shows evidence of a type of family homeostasis, and Mirra Komarovsky offers a social-class comparison of typical kinds of husband-wife relationships.Despite the contrasting opinion presented in the volume, the central theme runs through much of social science - the quest for better descriptions of small group process and the actual ways in which family participants affect one another. Bringing together original source materials that are both controversial and cross-disciplinary, "Man, Woman, and Marriage" promotes classroom discussion and is of immediate significance to all studies of marriage and family life whatever social-science discipline is emphasized.

Excerpt from When You Marry Getting married and raising a family today require advance preparation. Most couples want their marriages to succeed. But wishing happiness is not enough. Marriages that have been preceded by study and careful mate selection and which are followed by skillful handling of adjustments have high success rates. Without adequate preparation anything can happen! This book has been written to supply the kind of guidance that is sought and needed when you marry. As in the original When You Marry, the chapter order is functional. It focuses on the person contemplating marriage and takes up in turn the questions he actually asks, beginning with the part personality plays in marriage and ending with the problems of the empty nest. But in keeping with the spirit of the book, we recommend that the teacher of the class, or the leader of the group, poll the members to ascertain their interests. We have found that most young people are personality conscious and wish to begin as the text commences with "What You Bring to Marriage," or sometimes with Chapter Two, "It's Love!?" A group of wives and mothers, on the other hand, may choose to start with Part 2, "What It Means to Be Married," or with Part 3, "The Making of a Family." A class of out-of-school adults may prefer to consider the entire last section, "Family Life Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow," before taking up the more person-centered materials. This is functional education: to start where the person is and work outward, in this case to a broad understanding of the entire gamut of marriage and family problems. We hope the book will continue to be the basis for self-study for many young couples who find themselves unable to attend a course in marriage and the family. Our suggestions for further thinking and activity through counseling, specific readings, and helps for working out personal and family problems are designed to facilitate self-study as well as group discussion. We have tried to keep the book close to the realities of life, and in line with proven principles and valid scientific concepts.
