The purpose of this regional workshop in the Southeast was to broaden the environmental health perspective from its typical focus on environmental toxicology to a view that included the impact of the natural, built, and social environments on human health. Early in the planning, Roundtable members realized that the process of engaging speakers and developing an agenda for the workshop would be nearly as instructive as the workshop itself. In their efforts to encourage a wide scope of participation, Roundtable members sought input from individuals from a broad range of diverse fields-urban planners, transportation engineers, landscape architects, developers, clergy, local elected officials, heads of industry, and others. This workshop summary captures the discussions that occurred during the two-day meeting. During this workshop, four main themes were explored: (1) environmental and individual health are intrinsically intertwined; (2) traditional methods of ensuring environmental health protection, such as regulations, should be balanced by more cooperative approaches to problem solving; (3) environmental health efforts should be holistic and interdisciplinary; and (4) technological advances, along with coordinated action across educational, business, social, and political spheres, offer great hope for protecting environmental health. This workshop report is an informational document that provides a summary of the regional meeting.

This book adopts a human ecology approach to present an overview of the biological responses to social, political, economic, cultural and environmental changes that affected human populations in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, since the Classic Maya Period. Human bodies express social relations, and we can read these relations by analyzing biological tissues or systems, and by measuring certain phenotypical traits at the population level. Departing from this theoretical premise, the contributors to this volume analyze the interactions between ecosystems, sociocultural systems and human biology in a specific geographic region to show how changes in sociocultural and natural environment affect the health of a population over time. Human ecology is a synthetic transdisciplinary science concerned with human life and culture as a dynamic component of ecosystems. Typical of an interdisciplinary science is an approach which integrates topics under study across the usual traditional or classical branches of science Human ecology synthesizes part of the knowledge of several classical disciplines in a specific way. Of the many possible research orientations for understanding the relationship of people to their environment, not all are ecological, and only a few can be considered human ecology. More than 50 per cent of accumulated human knowledge is related to the study of man and some aspect of our environment. If we called all this knowledge human ecology, it would be a meaningless generalization, Because science has been based on the study of specific topics, for example such classic disciplines as physics, geology, biology, anthropology, and interactions such as genetics and ecology, or problems such as auxology and evolution, human ecology provides a definite transdisciplinary approach to study by assuming specific perspectives. Human ecology may be considered to have two parallel foci: (1) an academic human ecology as a scientific discipline, and (2) an action oriented human ecology which is technological (environmental engineering, environmental preservation, environmental education, and health protection against environmental deterioration.) In human ecology several categorical divisions and research perspectives may be defined and delimited into 4 main groups: 1 Philosophical problems of human ecology; 2. Social and biological problems of the human environment 3. Ecological problems of human biology 4. Cultural adaptive behavior. The works of about one hundred ninety persons were classified and included in this volume there are abstracts from others whose addresses are not included (sent by other authors, or by other institutions) but worthy of being added.

This book focuses on the emerging health issues due to climate change, particularly emphasizing the situation in developing countries. Thanks to recent development in the areas of remote sensing, GIS technology, and downscale modeling of climate, it has now become possible to depict and predict the relationship between environmental factors and health-related event data with a meaningful spatial and temporal scale. The chapters address new aspects of environment-health relationship relevant to this smaller scale analyses, including how considering people’s mobility changes the exposure profile to certain environmental factors, how considering behavioral characteristics is important in predicting diarrhea risks after urban flood, and how small-scale land use patterns will affect the risk of infection by certain parasites, and subtle topography of the land profile. Through the combination of reviews and case studies, the reader would be able to learn how the issues of health and climate/social changes can be addressed using available technology and datasets. The post-2015 UN agenda has just put forward, and tremendous efforts have been started to develop and establish appropriate indicators to achieve the SDG goals. This book will also serve as a useful guide for creating such an indicator associated with health and planning, in line with the Ecohealth concept, the major tone of this book. With the increasing and pressing needs for adaptation to climate change, as well as societal change, this would be a very timely publication in this trans-disciplinary field.
