The conference on "RNA: Catalysis, Splicing, Evolution" brought together a unique assembly of scientific leaders in this currently very important field. Two participants of this Conference, Drs. T.R. Cech and S. Altman, were just awarded the 1989 Nobel prize in chemistry, which attests to the timeliness of this volume. The critical reviews authored by these two prominent scientists are included. For those scientists with roots in this field, who do not subscribe to GENE, this is an excellent opportunity to obtain a masterly collection of papers. All the original papers and reviews have undergone the rigorous peer review of the journal "Gene".

Non Protein Coding Rnas written by Nils Walter and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-18 with Science categories.

The 2006 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to the discoverers of RNA interference, Andrew Fire and Craig Mello. This prize, which follows “RNA” Nobels for splicing and RNA catalysis, highlights just one class of recently discovered non-protein coding RNAs. Remarkably, non-coding RNAs are thought to outnumber protein coding genes in mammals by perhaps as much as four-fold. In fact, it appears that the complexity of an organism correlates with the fraction of its genome devoted to non-protein coding RNAs. Essential biological processes as diverse as cell differentiation, suppression of infecting viruses and parasitic tra- posons, higher-level organization of eukaryotic chromosomes, and gene expression are found to be largely directed by non-protein coding RNAs. Currently, bioinformatic, high-throughput sequencing, and biochemical approaches are identifying an increasing number of these RNAs. Unfortunately, our ability to characterize the molecular details of these RNAs is significantly lacking. The biophysical study of these RNAs is an emergent field that is unraveling the molecular underpinnings of how RNA fulfills its multitude of roles in sustaining cellular life. The resulting understanding of the physical and chemical processes at the molecular level is critical to our ability to harness RNA for use in biotechnology and human therapy, a prospect that has recently spawned a multi-billion dollar industry.

RNA technologies are the driving forces of modern medicine and biotechnology. They combine the fields of biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, physics, nanotechnology and bioinformatics. The combination of these topics is set to revolutionize the medicine of tomorrow. After more than 15 years of extensive research in the field of RNA technologies, the first therapeutics are ready to reach the first patients. Thus we are witnessing the birth of a very exciting time in the development of molecular medicine, which will be based on the methods of RNA technologies. This volume is the first of a series. It covers various aspects of RNA interference and microRNAs, although antisense RNA applications, hammerhead ribozyme structure and function as well as non-coding RNAs are also discussed. The authors are internationally highly respected experts in the field of RNA technologies.

Fundamentals Of Molecular Virology written by Christopher D. Richardson and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-04-22 with Science categories.

Comprehensive coverage of major families of viruses, including human pathogens and viruses of organisms from bacteria to plants, with updated information on antiviral drugs, vaccines, antiviral immunity, and gene therapy Fundamentals of Molecular Virology is a textbook designed for university students learning about viruses at the undergraduate or graduate levels. Chapters contributed by prominent virologists cover many of the major virus families. Each chapter is designed to tell a story about the viruses covered, including information on discovery, diseases and pathogenesis, virus structure, steps in replication, and interaction with cellular signaling pathways. This approach portrays the “personality” of each virus, helping students to learn the material and build up their knowledge of virology starting with smaller and simpler viruses and proceeding to more complex viruses. Major importance is given to viruses that infect humans and cause disease, but coverage is broad, including viruses of bacteria, Archaea, algae, invertebrates, and plants. Information boxes highlight applications and research directions of particular significance. Chapters conclude with sections presenting fundamental concepts, review questions, and lists of key terms, which are defined in a glossary at the end of the book. This 3rd edition of Fundamentals of Molecular Virology includes detailed information on the recent COVID-19 pandemic and mRNA vaccine technology, additional sections on pathogenic herpesviruses, and updates on recent outbreaks of Zika virus, Ebola virus and mpox diseases. New chapters describe hepatitis C virus, rhabdoviruses, viruses of invertebrates, oncolytic viruses, and virus-mediated gene therapy. All chapters, including those on innate and adaptive immune responses to virus infections, virus vaccines, and antiviral agents, were revised and updated.

In recent years, unprecedented advances in many aspects of the molecular biology of nucleic acids have been witnessed. The area of RNA chemistry has undergone a kind of explosion, with a huge interest in RNA-mediated catalysis. At the same time, our structural understanding of DNA-protein interactions has increased enormously, and the related area of RNA-protein interactions is beginning to gather pace. This softcover edition from the successful series Nucleic Acids and Molecular Biology is devoted to the structure and mechanism of ribozymes, and their potential exploitation. The subject has both important evolutionary implications and potential practical application in the development of therapeutic agents for diseases such as AIDS.
