Adolescents with type 1 diabetes must learn to balance the complexities of managing a chronic disease with managing non-disease-related experiences in their daily life that also contribute to stress. For example, in addition to diabetes management, these adolescents must also balance ongoing demands from everyday life stressors including school, social interactions, and home and family life. However, it remains unclear if daily diabetes management might contribute to experiences of everyday life stress. The present study assessed the association between daily everyday life stress and blood glucose regulation in adolescents with type 1 diabetes using both linear and nonlinear models. Thirty-nine adolescents diagnosed with type 1 diabetes between the ages of 13-17 completed seven daily diary surveys. Data were analyzed using multilevel modeling, including both linear covariation and autoregressive dynamic systems approaches. Results found that everyday life stress represents a regulatory system (attractor state) at the daily level, but daily blood glucose regulation did not covary with everyday life stress in the linear model nor change the state of the regulatory system in the autoregressive systems model. Future studies should continue to explore the relationship between everyday life stress and blood glucose regulation using a dynamic systems framework with different methodological approaches to better capture within-day nuances in stress and glucose regulation in adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

The Biopsychosocial Model Of Health And Disease written by Derek Bolton and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-28 with Psychology categories.

This open access book is a systematic update of the philosophical and scientific foundations of the biopsychosocial model of health, disease and healthcare. First proposed by George Engel 40 years ago, the Biopsychosocial Model is much cited in healthcare settings worldwide, but has been increasingly criticised for being vague, lacking in content, and in need of reworking in the light of recent developments. The book confronts the rapid changes to psychological science, neuroscience, healthcare, and philosophy that have occurred since the model was first proposed and addresses key issues such as the model’s scientific basis, clinical utility, and philosophical coherence. The authors conceptualise biology and the psychosocial as in the same ontological space, interlinked by systems of communication-based regulatory control which constitute a new kind of causation. These are distinguished from physical and chemical laws, most clearly because they can break down, thus providing the basis for difference between health and disease. This work offers an urgent update to the model’s scientific and philosophical foundations, providing a new and coherent account of causal interactions between the biological, the psychological and social.

The Science Of Emotional Intelligence written by Gerald Matthews and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Psychology categories.

During the past decade, emotional intelligence has been subjected to both scientific and public scrutiny. Numerous articles have been published on the topic in both academic journals and the popular press, testifying to the potential usefulness of emotional intelligence in psychology, business, education, the home, and the workplace. However, until now, there has been no systematic synthesis that grounds emotional intelligence in contemporary theory, while simultaneously sorting scientific approaches from popular fads and pseudoscience. Bringing together leading international experts from a variety of sub-disciplines, this volume aims to integrate recent research on emotional intelligence. The contributors address a set of focused questions concerning theory, measures, and applications: How does emotional intelligence relate to personality? What is the optimal approach to testing emotional intelligence? How can emotional intelligence be trained? In the final section of the book, the volume editors distill and synthesize the main points made by these experts and set forth an agenda for building a science of emotional intelligence in the future. Science of Emotional Intelligence will be an invaluable resource for researchers and professionals in psychology, education, the health sciences, and business.

Physical movement has a positive effect on physical fitness, morbidity, and mortality in individuals with diabetes. Although exercise has long been considered a cornerstone of diabetes management, many health care providers fail to prescribe it. In addition, many fitness professionals may be unaware of the complexities of including physical activity in the management of diabetes. Giving patients or clients a full exercise prescription that take other chronic conditions commonly accompanying diabetes into account may be too time-consuming for or beyond the expertise of many health care and fitness professionals. The purpose of this book is to cover the recommended types and quantities of physical activities that can and should be undertaken by all individuals with any type of diabetes, along with precautions related to medication use and diabetes-related health complications. Medications used to control diabetes should augment lifestyle improvements like increased daily physical activity rather than replace them. Up until now, professional books with exercise information and prescriptions were not timely or interactive enough to easily provide busy professionals with access to the latest recommendations for each unique patient. However, simply instructing patients to “exercise more” is frequently not motivating or informative enough to get them regularly or safely active. This book is changing all that with its up-to-date and easy-to-prescribe exercise and physical activity recommendations and relevant case studies. Read and learn to quickly prescribe effective and appropriate exercise to everyone.
