My objective with this book was to collect poetry over a period of time and showcase them in the order I wrote them. I wanted to express my life and experiences in words; a self-portrait in poetry form. I was about sixteen years old when I wrote the first poem, "Another thing entirely" and so began the twelve-year span of poetry in this book. My hope is that you can connect with my poetry and relate to them in your own experiences.

John Ashbery’s most renowned collection of poetry -- Winner of The Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award First released in 1975, Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror is today regarded as one of the most important collections of poetry published in the last fifty years. Not only in the title poem, which the critic John Russell called “one of the finest long poems of our period,” but throughout the entire volume, Ashbery reaffirms the poetic power that made him an outstanding figure in contemporary literature. These are poems “of breathtaking freshness and adventure in which dazzling orchestrations of language open up whole areas of consciousness no other American poet as ever begun to explore” (The New York Times).

Self Portrait As Othello written by Jason Allen-Paisant and has been published by Carcanet Press Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-03-30 with Poetry categories.

Shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize 2023 Shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Collection 2023 The Poetry Book Society Spring Choice 2023 Jason Allen-Paisant's debut collection Thinking With Trees won the 2022 OCM Bocas Prize for poetry and was an Irish Times and White Review Book of the Year 2021. In Poetry London Maryam Hessavi wrote, 'Jason Allen-Paisant is uncompromising when digging down through the undergrowth of our imperialist past – and yet he succeeds in replanting new narratives in the same soil where these toxic ideologies used to, and still, reside.' The interlocking poems of his second collection, Self-Portrait as Othello, imagine Othello in the urban landscapes of modern London, Paris and Venice and invent the kinds of narrative he might tell about his intersecting identities. Poetic memoir and ekphrastic experiment, Self-Portrait as Othello focuses on a character at once fictional and real. Othello here represents a structure of feeling that was emerging in seventeenth-century Venice, and is still with us. Portraiting himself as Othello, Allen-Paisant refracts his European travels and considers the Black male body, its presence, transgressiveness and vulnerabilities. Othello's intertwined identities as 'immigrant' and 'Black', which often operate as mutually reinforcing vectors, speak to us in the landscape of twenty-first-century Europe.

Self Portrait In Dystopian Landscape written by Stephen Lackaye and has been published by Unicorn Press (Nc) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Poetry categories.

Winner of the Unicorn Press First Book Award. In SELF-PORTRAIT IN DYSTOPIAN LANDSCAPE, Stephen Lackaye explores post-industrial disquiet in the Rust Belt. The figures in his poems try to reckon a subtle menace that lingers just beyond sure sight. A man who knows he is being watched contemplates the life of his voyeur. A laborer returning home hears a trap clap shut on someone in the woods and wonders if he can save the victim--if there is indeed someone to save. A youth recollects his early education in hand-to-hand combat, unsure of what violence he was ever capable of. Lackaye anneals these stories in a bright lyrical fire. These poems prompt us to distinguish the darkness within from the darkness without, to recover from the ruinous landscape the outlines of one's own self. "In his masterful and powerful debut collection of poems, SELF-PORTRAIT IN DYSTOPIAN LANDSCAPE, Stephen Lackaye's sweeping and muscular meditations enfold the piercing reflections of their speaker with luminous broad-stroked sketches of his passage through the urban (and a few natural) landscapes of this precarious time. This is an incisive, deeply wise, and illuminating collection of poems--a superb new voice has joined the ever-shifting landscape of contemporary American poetry."--David St. John "Bereft and lost as Odysseus going home, the singer of these poems wanders a place where a butterfly is a knife, a brother a ghost, and 'all that's possible betrays us.' The hero of Stephen Lackaye's SELF-PORTRAIT IN DYSTOPIAN LANDSCAPE is a cunning warrior left to his wits, and poem after poem deepens the story of his survival. What rings out in the end astounds me--something tender and lovely and new. What an amazing poet, what a gorgeous book."--Steve Scafidi "Very few young poets are brave enough to embrace silence in order to listen intently to the murmurings of the mind. Stephen Lackaye is one of them, and his extraordinary debut, SELF-PORTRAIT IN DYSTOPIAN LANDSCAPE, embodies that bravery and wisdom. This book is a life-affirming instrument of truth. By means of sly wit, arresting imagery, and a mature lyric craft, it persuades us to transcend the intimate and public wreckages of our present moment."--David Roderick Poetry.

Poetry. "An oblique conversation with Degas reigns throughout this collection of oddly heartbreaking pieces. Against the backdrop of his paintings and sketches, we find ourselves in an intimate world, coherent but uncanny, where private memory becomes inseparable from the culture we hold in common, and all of it just barely cracked open, riven by interstices through which we glimpse the vivid but unsayable. White has given us a truly exceptional first collection, deeply musical and intricately haunting" Cole Swensen."

The dark attunes our eyes to detail the light can sometimes conceal; similarly, Colette Bryce’s new poems are ‘slant tellings’ that reveal strange and true reflections. Using a wide range of imaginative strategies, Bryce examines the ways in which time is held, space enclosed – and a life framed and given meaning: a face in a broken mirror, a spider trapped under a glass, or a stolen kiss in a car-wash. Bryce’s two previous prize-winning collections were widely admired for their marvellously seductive music and their speed of thought; Self-Portrait in the Dark widens and deepens the poet’s scope, and is her most emotionally compelling collection to date. Praise for The Full Indian Rope Trick ‘[Bryce’s] poems, sensitive as the needle that registers some distant earth tremor, are delicately poised . . . Bryce’s vision is questing, disquieting, dark . . . as she seeks out the truths of life and love that transform the human heart. This is a confident, complex, subversive collection that shows us the magic by which one becomes a mature poet’ The Times

Cees Nooteboom, best known for his novel The Following Story,is one of the most distinguished and significant authors living in the Netherlands today. Self-Portrait of an Other is one of the most unique and innovative works in his oeuvre. Written in response to and published together with a series of drawings by the Berlin-based artist Max Neumann, the book draws on Nooteboom's personal reflections --his arsenal of memories, dreams, fantasies, landscapes, stories and nightmares-- and presents a set of prose poems that complements and echoes Neumann's work. Full of striking scenes and disturbing images, the poems, driven by the logic of dreams, create the self-portrait of the title. Available now for the first time in English, Self-Portrait of an Other brings together both the images and the text inspired by them, creating an unusual and creative poetic collection.
