Excerpt from Self-Selected Essays: A Second Series A few years ago my friend Mr. John Buchan was at the pains to make a selection from my Essays for the Nelson Series. I am sure he made as good a job of it as possible. At all events no complaints have reached my ears, though to be sure, in such a matter as a selection, the world is very easily content. Not so the author who has been thus treated. He, when he turns the pages of the truncated thing, though fully alive to the fact (else were he a fool, an unbearable hypothesis) that selection involves omission, and that consequently omissions there must be, is yet uneasy as he reads. Everywhere discrimination is decerned, as against himself; discrimination with its consequent rejection; nor can he take pleasure in the thought of his trifles "light as air" being weighed in the critical scales, one against another. Self to Self brings together essays on personal identity, autonomy, and moral emotions by the philosopher J. David Velleman. Although the essays were written independently, they are unified by an overarching thesis - that there is no single entity denoted by "the self " - as well as by themes from Kantian ethics, psychoanalytic theory, social psychology, and Velleman's work in the philosophy of action. Two of the essays were selected by the editors of Philosophers' Annual as being among the ten best papers in their year of publication. Self to Self will be of interest to philosophers, psychologists, and others who theorize about the self.

A compilation of the best essays written by the father of transcendentalism, with selections from Emerson’s lectures on history, art, politics, and more In the words of Harold Bloom, “Emerson's prose is his triumph, both as eloquence and as insight. After Shakespeare, it matches anything else in the language.” Here are Ralph Waldo Emerson's classic essays, including the exhortation to “Self-Reliance,” the embattled realizations of “Circles” and “Experience,” and the groundbreaking achievement of “Nature.” Our most eloquent champion of individualism, Emerson acknowledges at the same time the countervailing pressures of society in American life. Even as he extols what he calls “the great and crescive self,” he dramatizes and records its vicissitudes. Also gathered here are his wide-ranging discourses on history, art, politics, friendship, love, and much more. For almost thirty years, The Library of America has presented America's best and most significant writing in acclaimed hardcover editions. Now, a new series, Library of America Paperback Classics, offers attractive and affordable books that bring The Library of America's authoritative texts within easy reach of every reader. Each book features an introductory essay by a leading writer, as well as a detailed chronology of the author's life and career, an essay on the choice and history of the text, and notes.
