This volume is a collection of thirteen essays built around the question ‘what is the supernatural, and how, and why, has it changed over time?’ It is divided into two complementary sections; the first focussing on research on the discourse of the supernatural (including the miraculous) located in the medieval and early modern eras, and the second consisting of a set of test-cases involving research on the uncanny, often articulated in a post-Freudian sense, as expressed in modern literature, film and art. The eclectic and prismatic approach pursued via a variety of test-cases of the supernatural in this book gives rise to a clear, comparative and diachronic study of the main characteristics of the supernatural.

This interdisciplinary collection explores four distinct perspectives about the mask, as object of use for protection, identity, and disguise. In part I, contributors address human identities within collective social performance, with chapters on performativity and the far right and masked identities in political resistance and communication. Part II focuses on the mask as a signifying object with strong representational challenges, exploring representations in festivals, literature, and film. Part III investigates the ambiguous use of the mask as a protective and concealing element, delving into visual culture and digital social media contexts. Finally, Part VI draws on the work of Levinas and Deleuze to investigate a philosophical view of the mask that addresses memory and ethics within intersubjective relationships. Questioning the contemporary world, using communication, sociology, visual culture, and philosophical theory, the volume provides a pedagogical and formative perspective on the mask.

Este texto apresenta uma proposta de compreensão das artes plásticas e da crítica em Portugal nos anos setenta e oitenta, na sua relação com os conceitos de vanguarda e de pós-modernismo. Trata-se, num primeiro momento, de traçar uma perspetiva de caráter mais historicista e panorâmico, pautada pela fixação e cruzamento de informação, até à data apresentada de modo disperso ou monograficamente focado. E é precisamente a análise desta informação que nos leva a aceitar a hipótese de que estes conceitos nos permitem o entendimento deste panorama, conduzindo-nos, num segundo momento, a um exercício teórico e epistemológico de definição dos conceitos de vanguarda e de pós-modernismo, os quais, servem, portanto, de fios condutores deste estudo. Este trabalho culmina na análise da prática artística em Portugal no período em questão, concretamente nos eventos coletivos de artes plásticas que se propuseram, conceptual e objectualmente, interrogar e apropriar os conceitos de vanguarda e de pós-modernismo, procurando perceber se, não obstante os tempos e a intensidade da arte portuguesa maioritariamente não terem sido os mesmos dos centros artísticos mais eminentes, estas exposições – Alternativa Zero: Tendências Polémicas na Arte Portuguesa Contemporânea (1977), Depois do Modernismo (1983), Os Novos Primitivos: os Grandes Plásticos (1984), Atitudes Litorais (1984), Arquipélago (1985) e Continentes: V Exposição Homeostética (1986) – conseguem, a seu modo, enriquecer e transformar os conceitos em causa, permitindo uma redefinição da própria história da arte portuguesa deste período.

Aracy Amaral constructs a careful criticism and history of modern and contemporary art in Brazil. She was director of the Pinacoteca do Estado de Sao Paulo (1975-1979) and the Museum of Contemporary Art, University of SÀo Paulo (1982-1986 ). Amaral combines the thorough work of the researcher provision of combative intellectual who constantly asks about the place of art and the artist in society. The three volumes of texts of the Tropic of Capricorn bring together some 150 articles, essays and interviews conducted by the author from the beginning of the 80s and 2005, providing a point of view very rich for the reader who wants to be fully informed about the development of fine arts in our time. Modernism, modern art and commitment to the place, the first title of the collection, paints a picture of Brazilian modernism, from its beginning until the unfolding of the 50's, without ever losing sight of their relationship to the international scene, and the crossings between aesthetics and politics that characterize the modern and contemporary art. Circuits of art in Latin America and Brazil, the second volume, has written in the Latin American cultural reality, discussing, among other topics, the issue of Brazilian art integration on the continent. In this context, the author devotes special attention to the multiple relationships between the circuits of art and urban areas, particularly in Third World countries.The third volume of the collection, Contemporary artists Biennial in Brazil, begins with a comprehensive reflection on the role of the Sao Paulo Biennial, in light of its history and the comparison with models such as Documenta in Kassel, Germany, and the Venice Biennale , In Italy. The second part begins with a conversation with Helio Oiticica, held in New York in 1977 - and until now unknown - and then presents a portrait of dozens of Brazilian artists working in the 80s and 90s, many of them caught here as they emerged in the cultural scene.
