An enterprise architecture tries to describe and control an organisation’s structure, processes, applications, systems and techniques in an integrated way. The unambiguous specification and description of components and their relationships in such an architecture requires a coherent architecture modelling language. Lankhorst and his co‐authors present such an enterprise modelling language that captures the complexity of architectural domains and their relations and allows the construction of integrated enterprise architecture models. They provide architects with concrete instruments that improve their architectural practice. As this is not enough, they additionally present techniques and heuristics for communicating with all relevant stakeholders about these architectures. Since an architecture model is useful not only for providing insight into the current or future situation but can also be used to evaluate the transition from ‘as‐is’ to ‘to‐be’, the authors also describe analysis methods for assessing both the qualitative impact of changes to an architecture and the quantitative aspects of architectures, such as performance and cost issues. The modelling language presented has been proven in practice in many real‐life case studies and has been adopted by The Open Group as an international standard. So this book is an ideal companion for enterprise IT or business architects in industry as well as for computer or management science students studying the field of enterprise architecture.

The act of design is the premise to that of building. Hence, the former cannot be dissociated from the latter without depriving the discipline from its ontological essence. Thus, if architecture ultimately leads to an act of construction, how can its inception operate autonomously from its ultimate 'logos' of making? Such a question finds its answer in the vicissitudes of the tectonic in architectural discourse since the industrial revolution. Subverting the classical bond between Art and Science, the cultural secularization initiated during the late Renaissance progressively overthrew the Greek notion of techne. As this shift reached its pinnacle with the mechanization of the process of production, Semper and Botticher suggested theories re-coding the notions of tectonics anticipating the predicament of logocentrism. While stressing the symbolic value of the tectonics and its potential for architectural autonomy, their discourse was not pervasive enough in modern practice to prevent the technification of the structural. Since then, the core-form has been gradually relegated to being a concealed instrument subservient to formal tropes of a veneer striving for its autonomy. The techne became the technical; a vulgar tool for solving rather than a designing attribute. Thus the poetic potential of tectonic forms remains largely misunderstood and unexplored in contemporary practice. This thesis argues that the deliberate expression of architecture's constructed essence is the most fundamental tool available to designers in developing an ethical semantic. Consequently, through a critical unfolding of the status of the tectonics since the industrial revolution, the following seeks clues to build a case propounding a structural symbolic awareness in architecture. The last part will investigate the implementation of these ideas with the seismic retrofitting of an 1910 elementary school.

Computational Architectures Integrating Neural and Symbolic Processes: A Perspective on the State of the Art focuses on a currently emerging body of research. With the reemergence of neural networks in the 1980s with their emphasis on overcoming some of the limitations of symbolic AI, there is clearly a need to support some form of high-level symbolic processing in connectionist networks. As argued by many researchers, on both the symbolic AI and connectionist sides, many cognitive tasks, e.g. language understanding and common sense reasoning, seem to require high-level symbolic capabilities. How these capabilities are realized in connectionist networks is a difficult question and it constitutes the focus of this book. Computational Architectures Integrating Neural and Symbolic Processes addresses the underlying architectural aspects of the integration of neural and symbolic processes. In order to provide a basis for a deeper understanding of existing divergent approaches and provide insight for further developments in this field, this book presents: (1) an examination of specific architectures (grouped together according to their approaches), their strengths and weaknesses, why they work, and what they predict, and (2) a critique/comparison of these approaches. Computational Architectures Integrating Neural and Symbolic Processes is of interest to researchers, graduate students, and interested laymen, in areas such as cognitive science, artificial intelligence, computer science, cognitive psychology, and neurocomputing, in keeping up-to-date with the newest research trends. It is a comprehensive, in-depth introduction to this new emerging field.
