Semantics And Experience written by Hoyt Alverson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Are there universal as well as culturally particular experiences and expressions of "time"? Hoyt Alverson questions the widely held anthropological assumption that temporal expression and experience represent little more than local cultural constructions. Drawing on extensive data from four widely divergent languages and cultures--English, Mandarin, Hindi, and Sesotho--he argues that people everywhere experience time in fundamentally similar ways. Semantics and Experience reveals not only how such expressions vary as a function of ideological and cultural differences but also how, despite these differences, they reveal a basic similarity that points to their origin in a pan-human approach to the construction and cognition of space.

Construing Experience Through Meaning written by M.A.K. Halliday and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-05-16 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The subject of this book is how human beings construe their experience of the world. The construction of experience is usually thought of as knowledge, represented in the form of conceptual taxonomies, schemata, scripts and the like. The authors offer an interpretation that is complementary to this, treating experience not as knowing but as meaning; and hence as something that is construed in language. In other words, the concern is with the construal of human experience as a semantic system; and since language plays the central role not only in storing and exchanging experience but also in construing it, language is taken as the interpretative base. The focus of the book is both theoretical and descriptive. The authors consider it important that theory and description should develop in parallel, with constant interchange between the two. The major descriptive component is an account of the most general features of the ideational semantics of English, which is then exemplified in two familiar text types (recipes and weather forecasts). There is also a brief reference to the semantics of Chinese. Theoretical issues are raised throughout as they become relevant to the discussion, with the theoretical base being drawn from systemic functional linguistics. Both the theoretical and descriptive proposals offered in the book are compared and contrasted with approaches deriving from AI, cognitive science and cognitive linguistics.

Anna Wierzbicka demonstrates that three uniquely English words--evidence, experience, and sense--are linchpins for whole networks of meanings, and that penetrating the meanings of such key words can open our eyes to an entire cultural universe.

Wylie Breckenridge offers a fresh understanding of the character of visual experience by deploying the methods of semantics. He develops a theory of what we mean by the 'look' sentences that we use to describe our visual experiences, and on that basis develops a theory of what it is to have a visual experience with a certain character.

Humans involuntarily experience physical items as having meaning-properties. Semantic Perception explores this experience--the phenomenology of the understanding of language--in depth. Jody Azzouni shows the many ways that we experience the meaning-properties of language artifacts as independent of the intentions of their makers.

Meaning And Experience written by Patrizia Violi and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Meaning (Philosophy) categories.

How do we come to give names to things? Why do some things have names while others do not? What is the nature of the relationship between the reality we perceive and the language we use? How do we establish the meaning of words, and how can we be sure that we are sharing the same meanings with others? These and other related problems have been discussed in linguistics, semiotics, the philosophy of language, and psychology for a long time. In Meaning and Experience, Patrizia Violi reviews the most salient issues and themes in this complex debate, taking an interdisciplinary approach. In addition to citing empirical data from research in linguistics and the philosophy of language, she considers the most recent studies in cognitive psychology and neuropsychology, especially in relation to the problem of categorization and its relevance for the construal of linguistic meaning. Moving from the analysis of lexical meaning, Violi addresses some general issues in semantics, including the role of perception in the structuring of language, text comprehension, and text interpretation. She suggests an original model of analysis based on an experiential and phenomenological approach. This model leads to a blending of lexical analysis with that of textual interpretation. All the theoretical discussions and models presented are richly illustrated with concrete examples.

Semantics written by Robert A. Hipkiss and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-10 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The subject of semantics has been appropriated by various disciplines including linguistic philosophy, logic, cognitive psychology, anthropological linguistics, and computer technology. As a result, it is difficult to define the study of semantics as an actual discipline without discovering what each field using a semantic approach to its subject matter has contributed to the understanding of what words mean. This volume is a result of those discoveries. Primarily an introductory work, this volume outlines the approaches that various disciplines have taken to the subject, attempts to show their relationships and their limitations, and presents the more important aspects of each approach -- from psychosemantics to artificial intelligence -- using pertinent source material from psychology, philosophy, logic, linguistics, and sociology. For individuals coming to the study of semantics for the first time, or those who are interested in what the overall study may offer beyond their specialization, this volume will provide a helpful overview of the subject.
