At the turn of the twenty-first century, several preoccupied travelers wander the gringo trail in South America. Among them, Albert, a retired U.S. postal worker, has come to the southern continent to “live in the moment.” Ten months into his journey, however, after experiencing epiphany on Salar de Uyuni, the power of love in the Rurrenabaque rain forest, and unbounded farce during the offseason at a beach town in Peru, the weary pilgrim can’t keep his eyes off his watch. Among them, Reynaldo, a Spanish teacher on sabbatical, aspires to reconstitute his life following divorce. He has already blown a chance for renewal with a cellist he met during Holy Week in Santa Cruz and driven off a poet who attempted to seduce him the night he met Albert. After breaking up a fist fight in Vilcabamba, Equador, Reynaldo hides out in his room at a hostel and wonders whether deliverance from his neurotic obsession will ever transpire. Among them, Marci, wife of an incorrigible philanderer, hopes that holiday in rough country with her husband will save their marriage. When Jerry ditches her at the start of a hike on Huayna Picchu, a Chicano boy named Simon volunteers to lead her up the peak and then plunges to his death at the top of their climb. Back in Cuzco, she learns that her spouse has betrayed her yet again. Among them, Simon, who was cheated out of a field trip to Peru in high school, has vowed, during a stay at a treatment center, to make the journey on his own. Due to his shaky grasp of geography, he begins his southern trek in Chile. In Tupiza, Bolivia, he befriends an addled Vietnam Veteran and, during an altercation between the two, shoves the ex-marine off a cliff. Sendero Gringo is a collection of travelogues that begins at the end of one road and ends at the beginning of another. No one path guides its reader but another and another wind ahead and back instead.

Sendero Luminoso or the Shining Path ranks among the most elusive, secretive, and brutal guerrilla organizations in the world. Once a radical uprising limited to the Andean highlands of Ayacucho, it is now a movement of national proportions that has woven itself into the fabric of Peruvian society. Unlike many other terrorists groups, Sendero Luminoso is founded upon an intellectual infrastructure crafted by the now legendary Abimael Guzman, a former philosophy professor. The body of the movement, however, is drawn from Peru's long-neglected Indian and mestizo populations. Peru's already fragile democracy is further weakened as the rural and urban underclasses become attached to Sendero Luminoso ideologically and emotionally. This book provides a comprehensive overview of this guerrilla organization and the Peruvian government's dilemma in dealing with it and the emergence of narcoterrorism, a mutually beneficial relationship between the cocaine syndicate and Sendero Luminoso. The Peruvian cocaine syndicate and Sendero Luminoso have different objectives and ideologies, but share a mutual enemy--the Peruvian government and its armed services. Hence they have combined forces to form a powerful and destructive alliance. Gabriela Tarazona-Sevillano assesses the impact of the Sendero Luminoso on Peruvian society, a new democratic government already besieged by complex and far-reaching problems. The book presents a detailed understanding of the peculiar and very personal nature of Peru's affliction as well as its possible international repercussions.

El Sendero Luminoso--The Shining Path--is Peru's long-standing Maoist revolutionary group that has significantly shifted the entire landscape of Peruvian political, social, and cultural life in fundamental ways. Emerging from the fractured leftist movements of the 1960s, The Shining Path has garnered world-wide attention as a unique, self-sufficient revolutionary group. The focus of the bibliography is on major works dealing with The Shining Path, articles and studies published in Latin American and other related scholarly journals, and Peruvian books that deal directly with the effects wrought by The Shining Path upon Peru. Also included are titles that do not deal directly with The Shining Path but discuss in depth the political context which nurtured the development of revolutionary groups such as The Shining Path and MRTA (Tupac Amaru), the Peruvian guerrilla group that captured world attention in 1997 by holding the Japanese embassy hostage for months. Approximately 1500 entries are included in this thorough bibliography. Short annotations highlight important aspects of the source. The bibliography is segmented into helpful subject areas that provide a cohesive sphere of information concerning the intersections of The Shining Path and Peruvian life, as well as interest in the revolutionary movement abroad. A helpful index completes this work.
