Embodied experience and sensorial understandings in Western music The Western history of aesthetics is characterised by tension between theory and practice. Musicians listen, play, and then listen more profoundly in order to play differently, adapt the body, and sense the environment. They become deeply involved in the sensorial qualities of music practice. Artistic practice refers to the original meaning of aesthetics—the senses. Whereas Baumgarten and Goethe explored the relationship between sensibility and reason, sensation and thinking, later philosophers of aesthetics deemed the sensorial to be confused and unreliable and instead prioritised a cognitive or objective approach. Written by authors from the fields of philosophy, composition, performance, and artistic practice, Sensorial Aesthetics in Music Practices repositions aesthetics as a domain of the sensible and explores the interaction between artists, life, and environment. Aesthetics becomes a field of sensorial and embodied experience involving temporal and spatial influences, implicit knowledge, and human characteristics. Music and noise seem to be mutually exclusive. Music is generally considered as an ordered arrangement of sounds pleasing to the ear and noise as its opposite: chaotic, ugly, aggressive, sometimes even deafening. When presented in a musical context, noise can thus act as a tool to express resistance to predominant cultural values, to society or to socioeconomic structures (including those of the music industry). The oppositional stance confirms current notions of noise as something which is destructive, a belief not only cherished by hard-core rock bands but also shared by engineers and companies developing devices to suppress or reduce noise in our daily environment. In contrast to the common opinions on noise just described, this volume seeks to explore the constructive potential of noise in contemporary musical practices. This Open Access book offers an original interdisciplinary overview of the role of haptic feedback in musical interaction. Divided into two parts, part I examines the tactile aspects of music performance and perception, discussing how they affect user experience and performance in terms of usability, functionality and perceived quality of musical instruments. Part II presents engineering, computational, and design approaches and guidelines that have been applied to render and exploit haptic feedback in digital musical interfaces. Musical Haptics introduces an emerging field that brings together engineering, human-computer interaction, applied psychology, musical aesthetics, and music performance. The latter, defined as the complex system of sensory-motor interactions between musicians and their instruments, presents a well-defined framework in which to study basic psychophysical, perceptual, and biomechanical aspects of touch, all of which will inform the design of haptic musical interfaces. A new theory of aesthetics and music, grounded in the collision between language and the body. In this book, Tim Hodgkinson proposes a theory of aesthetics and music grounded in the boundary between nature and culture within the human being. His analysis discards the conventional idea of the human being as an integrated whole in favor of a rich and complex field in which incompatible kinds of information—biological and cultural—collide. It is only when we acknowledge the clash of body and language within human identity that we can understand how art brings forth the special form of subjectivity potentially present in aesthetic experiences. As a young musician, Hodgkinson realized that music was, in some mysterious way, “of itself”—not isolated from life, but not entirely continuous with it, either. Drawing on his experiences as a musician, composer, and anthropologist, Hodgkinson shows how when we listen to music a new subjectivity comes to life in ourselves. The normal mode of agency is suspended, and the subjectivity inscribed in the music comes toward us as a formative “other” to engage with. But this is not our reproduction of the composer's own subjectivation; when we perform our listening of the music, we are sharing the formative risks taken by its maker. To examine this in practice, Hodgkinson looks at the work of three composers who have each claimed to stimulate a new way of listening: Pierre Schaeffer, John Cage, and Helmut Lachenmann.

The dissertation delineates several notions and conceptual tools of fundamental importance in our computer music practice, and proposes concrete applications of these concepts. The first chapter is centered around the dialectic of matter and form, from the perspective of aesthetic philosophy, and afterward within the musical discourse. In particular, we discuss the dualism empiricism vs. formalism, a prevalent binary opposition in computer music aesthetics. We generalize this dualism as the opposition signs vs. concepts. While acknowledging the pertinence of this opposition, both from the perspective of the aesthetics and the composition methods, we show that, in practice, the situation is more nuanced, and most computer music pieces exist somewhere on an axis drawn between pure empiricism and strict formalism. The following section discusses three compositional strategies to organize the sound material in a musical form: the form as a result of a process, sound transformations and morphological variations as structuring processes, and articulation of space as structuring element. The second chapter is centered around the notions of performance, bodily presence and human agency in computer music. We show that the increasing use of electronics and digital technologies in musical practices has dislocated our notion of liveness and magnified the possible interactions with the sound material. We discuss the consequences of the absence of the body or of bodily gestures in computer music performances, and we establish a network of relationships between timbre, attribution of causality, inference of intention, and emergence of a virtual presence, that we consider are at the source of fruitful and creative ambiguities in computer music. The third chapter presents our answers to these questions, in the form of six electronic music studies within a performance for dance, video and live electronics. These studies are based on a combination of direct interventions, improvisation and algorithmic processes. Several tools and techniques used in these pieces are presented, notably a modal synthesis model with morphing capabilities, a fractal-based algorithm to generate material at different time scales, a virtual analog extended model of the Xpander filter with morphing capabilities, and two reverberations able to generate abstract but cohesive spaces.
