An interesting alternative for today's high efficiency variable speed drives is the Permanent Magnet-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motor drive, which belongs to the family of brushless synchronous AC motor drives. Generally, the reluctance torque of this motor is significant compared to the Permanent Magnet electrical torque. The advantage of increased reluctance torque is the decreased need of expensive permanent magnet (PM) material, which makes this solution thus cheaper than the respective permanent magnet motor. Also due to its synchronous operation, sensorless rotational control is possible along with higher power factor and better efficiency compared to the induction motor (IM). Therefore, this thesis first deals with the implementation of a vector control strategy for speed control of the PMa-synRM motor that can be applied to a washing machine application. The machine is supplied by a current controlled voltage source PWM inverter to control the instantaneous stator currents which are decided by the reference speed. Secondly, the thesis focuses on the sensorless speed operation of the PMa-SynRM to take advantage of the lower costs as well as increased system reliability which otherwise is not possible using the delicate speed or position sensors. The concept involves estimation of the rotor speed and/or position. There are several speed estimation techniques proposed by researchers and among them the observer based technique is proven and commonly used in the industry. The only requirements of the observer system are a very fast signal processor, specialized and optimized to perform complex mathematical calculations. The feasibility and effectiveness of the control techniques are verified using the experimental results, implemented using the Texas Instruments TMS320F2812 eZDSP controller board and the overall motor drive system in the laboratory.

Recently, permanent magnet assisted (PMa)-synchronous reluctance motors (SynRM) have been considered as a possible alternative motor drive for high performance applications. In order to have an efficient motor drive, performing of three steps in design of the overall drive is not avoidable. These steps are design optimization of the motor, identification of the motor parameter and implementation of an advanced control system to ensure optimum operation. Therefore, this dissertation first deals with the design optimization of the Permanent Magnet Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motor (PMa-SynRM). Various key points in the rotor design of a low cost PMa-SynRM are introduced and their effects are studied. Finite element approach has been utilized to show the effects of these parameters on the developed average electromagnetic torque and the total d-q inductances. As it can be inferred from the name of the motor, there are some permanent magnets mounted in the rotor core. One of the features considered in the design of this motor is the magnetization of the permanent magnets mounted in the rotor core using the stator windings to reduce the manufacturing cost. At the next step, identification of the motor parameters is discussed. Variation of motor parameters due to temperature and airgap flux has been reported in the literatures. Use of off-line models for estimating the motor parameters is known as a computationally intensive method, especially when the models include the effect of cross saturation. Therefore in practical applications, on-line parameter estimation is favored to achieve a high performance control system. In this dissertation, a simple practical method for parameter estimation of the PMa-SynRM is introduced. Last part of the dissertation presents one advanced control strategy which utilized the introduced parameter estimator. A practical Maximum Torque Per Ampere (MTPA) control scheme along with a simple parameter estimator for PMa-SynRM is introduced. This method is capable of maintaining the MTPA condition and stays robust against the variations of motor parameters. Effectiveness of the motor design procedure and the control strategy is validated by presenting simulation and experimental results of a 1.5 kW prototype PMa-SynRM, designed and manufactured through the introduced design method.

In this study, optimal fault tolerant control of a five-phase permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMa-SynRM) has been proposed under different types of fault conditions. Consistent and safe operations of a system are major concerns for critical service applications of electrical motors particularly in the automotive and aerospace industries, and can be achieved through the use of advanced control strategies. The proposed fault tolerant control strategy is based on advanced vector control of the five-phase PMa-SynRM, which provides safe machine operation under various phase-loss fault conditions. The PMa-SynRM utilizes higher reluctance torque through large saliency ratio (ratio of d-axis and q-axis inductances) compared to a conventional permanent magnet motor. The phase currents (magnitude and phases) needed to achieve maximum torque under fault conditions have been derived. The degree of phase advance is varied based on different fault and load conditions, so as to deliver maximum output torque while reducing the phase current amplitudes to lessen saturation effect in the machine. Detailed theoretical analysis and finite element analyses (FEA) simulation have been carried out to verify the proposed method. The proposed method has also been validated through a 5 hp dynamo testing system.

PMa-SynRMs are similar to interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors in structure but are more economical due to reduced permanent magnets. This thesis presents an optimal design of five-phase permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMa-SynRM) for low torque ripple applications and its comparison with a three-phase PMa-SynRM. The research on the five-phase PMa-SynRM has been expanded to develop a 15kW integrated starter generator (ISG). In this study, the design of five-phase permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMa-SynRM) for low torque ripple. PMa-SynRMs are similar to interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors in structure but are more economical due to reduced permanent magnets. In this study, lumped parameter model (LPM) is used in the approach to initially design the five-phase PMa-SynRM. Numerical equations are integrated with the LPM to design the machine with its given range of design parameter values. Thousands of designs are generated by LPM, which are then converged to optimized model using differential evolution strategy (DES). Optimization is done with maximum efficiency and minimum torque ripple as objective. The optimized 3 kW five-phase PMa-SynRM is then analyzed by finite element method (FEM) for fine tuning. Simulation results for back electromotive force (EMF), flux linkage, developed torque, torque ripple, cogging torque, torque speed characteristics and necessary motor parameters such as d and q-axis inductances variation over respective axis currents are verified by fabricated prototype. In addition, comparison of three-phase and five-phase permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motors (PMa-SynRM) in terms of their design and performance characteristics is presented. With higher fault tolerant capability, efficiency, and reliability, the five-phase PMa-SynRM can be a better substitute when compared to the three-phase PMa-SynRM in critical applications where safety is top priority. In this study, for a fair comparison, same design procedure using LPM is followed in developing the three-phase and five-phase PMa-SynRMs. Performance characteristics such as torque pulsation, back-EMF, flux linkage, etc. are intensively simulated through FEM. The optimized three-phase and five-phase PMa-SynRMs are fabricated with the same power rating (3kW) and same volume. Experimental tests are conducted on the prototypes to validate the simulation results. A 15kW five-phase PMa-SynRM integrated starter generator (ISG) has been proposed in this study. Initial model in LPM and procedure to be followed to develop the final optimized model with DES optimizer has been presented.

This book offers an essential compendium on the analysis and design of synchronous motors for variable-speed applications. Focusing on synchronous reluctance and ferrite permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous reluctance machines, it provides a broad perspective on three-phase machines for variable speed applications, a field currently dominated by asynchronous machines and rare-earth PM synchronous machines. It also describes synchronous reluctance machines and PM machines without rare-earth materials, comparing them to state-of-the-art solutions. The book provides readers with extensive information on and finite element models of PM synchronous machines, including all relevant equations and with an emphasis on synchronous-reluctance and PM-assisted synchronous-reluctance machines. It covers ferrite-assisted machines, modeled as a subcase of PM-assistance, fractional slot combinations solutions, and a quantitative, normalized comparison of torque capability with benchmark PM machines. The book discusses a wealth of techniques for identifying machine parameters, with an emphasis on self-commissioning algorithms, and presents methods for automated machine design and optimization, including a software tool developed for this purpose. Addressing an important gap in the field of PM-less and less-PM electrical machines, it is intended as a self-contained reference guide for both graduate students and professional machine designers, and as a useful text for university courses on automated and/or optimized design of electrical machines and drives.

Control of the speed as well as shaping the speed transient response of a surface-mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is achieved using the method of feedback linearization and extended high-gain observer. To recover the performance of feedback linearization, an extended high-gain observer is utilized to estimate both the speed of the motor and the disturbance present in the system. The observer is designed based on a reduced model of the PMSM, which is realized through the application of singular perturbation theory. The motor parameters are assumed uncertain and we only assume knowledge of their nominal values. The external load torque is also assumed to be unknown and time-varying, but bounded. Stability analysis of the output feedback system is given. Experimental results confirm the performance and robustness of the proposed controller. We also compare our proposed control method to the cascaded Proportional Integral (PI) speed controller. Then, we show the extension of this control method to solve the problem of sensorless control of PMSMs. The proposed sensorless control method is a back-emf based control scheme. Therefore, we design a high-gain back-emf observer in the Îł-Îø coordinates. Next, we transform the model of the PMSM to the d-q coordinates, which is performed using the estimated position, and close the loop around the currents with relatively fast PI controllers. After that, we reduce the model of the PMSM and design a third order Q-PLL extended high-gain observer as well as the speed feedback controller. Then, we perform a rigorous stability analysis of the closed loop system. Finally, we show simulation and experimental results to verify performance and robustness of the proposed controller.
