(Cont.) The vectorial energy transfer design of sensory films to harvest and direct energy to the surface detection layer toward ultimate signal amplification has been discussed. Third, the role of chemical structure of a sensory polymer in the selectivity of a conjugated polymer-based fluorescent sensor has been examined. In two different sensory systems for the detection of potassium ions and a nitroaromatic explosive TNT, respectively, key chemical design parameters governing their selectivity have been rationalized. Finally, the combination of the conclusions of this thesis provided an idealized structure of a fluorescent conjugated polymer-based sensory film with optimized sensitivity and selectivity.

The equipment purchased with this grant has been used to process and analyze conjugated polymers with diverse structures. Fluorescent conjugated polymers have been under investigation in our laboratory as ultra-sensitive sensory materials. A Langmuir-Blodgett film deposition system was purchased for the molecular processing of these sensory polymers into highly aligned structures with optimal energy transport properties. These studies have been used to create precise nanostructures of polymers. Another outcome of the Langmuir-Blodgett studies is the formation of films that can interface with analytes and receptors in aqueous environments, which represents a critical step toward the formation of biosensor hybrid structures. A monochromatic UV-Vis light source was purchased to he used with a polarizing microscope. This system has been useful for the investigation of emissive liquid crystalline assemblies. To conduct detailed photophysical studies a fluorescence system was purchased. The impact of this equipment is readily apparent from the publications listed in the Supplementary Notes.
