Sensory Processes: The New Psychophysics describes, summarizes, and theorizes on the application of psychophysics to the study of sensory processes. This book deals with significant issues in sensory psychology, which is mainly by treating sensory dimensions and attributes as measurable quantities. Organized into seven chapters, this book starts with an overview of the fundamental methods for evaluating the magnitudes of sensation with emphasis direct scaling methods. This text then explains the advantages of direct scaling procedures in providing psychophysical and sensory-physical information. Other chapters consider the parameters of temporal and spatial distribution of the stimulus. This book discusses as well the other significant variables that determine sensitivity, particularly compositional variables that refer to wavelength and frequency of light and sound. The final chapter deals with several persistent issues and unresolved questions in the realm of sensory scaling. Sensory psychologists, sensory scientists, researchers, and graduate students will find this book useful.

This core text emphasizes the underlying neural structures and functions of sensory systems (pain, olfaction, gustation, audition, vision, etc.) and presents this complex material at a level comprehensible to undergraduates as well as beginning graduate students. The text begins with a review of the central nervous system and its sensory components and includes discussions of methodological techniques and procedures used to study sensory processes.

Bringing together contributors working on a common problem but addressing different levels of brain organization by way of different tehniques, The Mind-Brain Continuum seeks to determine which scientific questions are most pressing as we move toward discovering the neurobiology of psychological processes. As the title implies, contributions are organized around the notion that mental activity is brain activity, providing a broad, integrated view of a particular subset of brain function. The focus is on sensory perception, processes that include somatosensory, auditory and olfactory processes, as well as research on vision.

Sensory Processes at the Neuronal and Behavioral Levels is a collection of papers dealing with problems of functional organization of the visual and auditory systems. One paper points out that neurophysiological and psychophysiological research in vision can be combined. The paper compares the cat's contrast stimulation by Hermann's grid that elicits neuronal responses of cells with concentric and simple fields as being similar to the subjective vision in man. Another paper addresses the sources of information in the perception of visual spatial relations. For example, eye movements as the source of information about visual spatial relations are refuted. The visual system already estimates accurately the spatial properties of an object before the onset of eye movements. Another paper discusses certain concepts about the mechanisms of the auditory system. One paper presents the results of an experiment involving some adult cats. They were lightly anesthetized and their responses were recorded when the inferior colliculus, or the left and right auditory cortex were stimulated electrically. Another paper analyzes the mechanism used by insect in recognizing species-specific songs. This book is suitable for neurophysiologists, neurochemists, and researchers dealing with physiological acoustics and the psychophysics of the visual system.

Information Processing Channels In The Tactile Sensory System written by George A. Gescheider and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-18 with Psychology categories.

Information-Processing Channels in the Tactile Sensory System addresses the fundamental question of whether sensory channels, similar to those known to operate in vision and audition, also operate in the sense of touch. Based on the results of psychophysical and neurophysiological experimentation the authors make a powerful case that channels operate in the processing of mechanical stimulation of the highly sensitive glabrous skin of the hand. According to the multichannel model presented in this monograph, each channel, with its specific type of mechanoreceptor and afferent nerve fiber, responds optiimally to particular aspects of the tactile stimulus. It is further proposed that the tactile perception of objects results from the combined activity of the individual tactile channels. This work is important because it provides researchers and students in the field of sensory neuroscience with a comprehensive model that enhances our understanding of tactile perception.
