Excerpt from Sentence and Theme: Composition for the First Year of High School English is so new a subject, the teaching of composition has been done with such a variety of new and old theories, that we teachers are perplexed by the multifariousness of counsel. There is a wide diversity of judgment about each element of composition-teaching. As to spelling, we may be urged to teach 5,000 words in the grades or only 500 in high school or to attend mostly to 100 "demons"; we may be told that troubles are largely oral or that oral difficulties are a small minority; we may be advised to teach spelling every day or not to worry much about spelling in themes. Grammar is insisted on in one quarter as vitally necessary; in another it is taboo. Punctuation is everywhere called for, but is said by many authorities to be a. matter of instinct, hardly reducible to definite rules for teaching pupils definite knowledge. Paragraphs are like geometrical propositions to one text-maker, and are "largely a feeling for appearance" to some who actually write books. School themes should be organized - many textbooks imply - with an introduction and a conclusion; "they should begin and end without those appurtenances" is the judgment of many journalists and authors. Even more perplexing than contrary opinions about each of these subjects is the lack of guidance in correlating them. How much of the virtue of a theme inheres in good spelling? Is a grammatical error worse than a misspelling or less heinous than a bit of poor diction? What direct relation has grammar to composition as a whole? to punctuation in particular? Is grammar an isolated subject, or is it a vital component in the second teaching of sentence-making? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Theme-Topic Interface (TTI) gives a useful catalogue of approaches to the concept Theme in the analysis of Natural Language. The book is written with both theoretical and descriptive goals and aims to synthesize and revise current approaches to pragmatic functions. In addition, TTI explains that different thematic constructions in natural language reveal different discourse strategies related to point of view and speaker subjectivity, which shows the mutually supportive role of form and discourse function vis-á-vis each other. The book's value is enhanced by the use of natural language corpora, the Lancaster IBM Spoken English Corpus (LIBMSEC), and by running multivariate statistical tests, taking into account both segmental and suprasegmental features. The bibliography lists more than 600 publications providing ample material for further research into an integrated theory of language and its use. The indexes provide easy access to most authors mentioned and to the major concepts covered.

Excerpt from Pilot Book for Sentence and Theme Some teachers whose time is very limited wish to know the best ways of abbreviating a course in Sentence and Theme. Omission and contraction are dangerous because, as in all education, work half done may not be done at all. But the following list indicates (approximately in order of less importance for teaching rudiments) the lessons which may be omitted in schools that have to sacrifice thoroughness to speed: 1. Lessons 30, 32, 33 (infinitives); see comment on Lessons 29 and 32 in the Pilot Book. 2. Lesson 29 (infinitives) and Lesson 34 (difficult gerunds). 3. Lesson 19 (address and exclamation). 4. Merely call attention emphatically to Lessons 11 (compound adjectives) and 31 (possessives). 5. Lesson 15 (less common prepositions). 6. Lesson 21 (two accusatives). 7. Lesson 26 (participles). 8. Lesson 46 (interrogatives). 9. Lesson 69 (it). 10. Lesson 77 (marks as servants). 11. Lessons 40 and 68 (ellipses). 12. Lessons 74 (parentheses) and 76 (dashes). 13. Reduce the time spent upon sentence analysis by omitting Lessons 57, 58, 61. 14. Lesson 17 (phrases). 15. Lesson 42(relatives). 16. Most of the themes. 17. The lessons that deal with elementary rhetoric: 4, 24, 36, 48, 66, 72. 18. It is a temptation for a teacher to reduce the time spent on "restrictive and non-restrictive," since this is more difficult and less important than some other subjects. But it is an important subject and can be well taught only by thoroughness. If it can be postponed to the next year (as it is in some schools), teachers can omit or bear lightly on Lessons 27, 28, 38, 43, 44, 53(and possibly 51 and 52). 19. Omit the exercises for Lessons 1, 3, 49, 70, and for the lessons indicated above. 20. Assign only half of the exercise material that is given in the lessons which are studied.
