Alternative ideas for a "smart" city, from a park bench that enforces time limits by ejecting the sitter to "electronically assisted" plants that encourage conservation. Our cities are "smart" and getting smarter as information processing capability is embedded throughout more and more of our urban infrastructure. Few of us object to traffic light control systems that respond to the ebbs and flows of city traffic; but we might be taken aback when discount coupons for our favorite espresso drink are beamed to our mobile phones as we walk past a Starbucks. Sentient City explores the experience of living in a city that can remember, correlate, and anticipate. Five teams of architects, artists, and technologists imagine a variety of future interactions that take place as computing leaves the desktop and spills out onto the sidewalks, streets, and public spaces of the city. "Too Smart City" employs city furniture as enforcers: a bench ejects a sitter who sits too long, a sign displays the latest legal codes and warns passersby against transgression, and a trashcan throws back the wrong kind of trash. "Amphibious Architecture" uses underwater sensors and lights to create a human-fish-environment feedback loop; "Natural Fuse" uses a network of "electronically assisted" plants to encourage energy conservation; "Trash Track" follows smart-tagged garbage on its journey through the city's waste-management system; and "Breakout" uses wireless technology and portable infrastructure to make the entire city a collaborative workplace. These projects are described, documented, and illustrated by 100 images, most in color. Essays by prominent thinkers put the idea of the sentient city in theoretical context.

As we proceed through the technological zeitgeist of the 21st century, we are encountering increasing amounts of challenges to our existing paradigms. One of such challenges is the ever-expanding integration of automata throughout our socio-ecological niche, leading to the rise of Artificial Intelligence as a catalyst for an unprecedented shift in the way we will think and live. It is this radical shift in our collective efforts in technological pioneering which forces us to confront the questions that fundamentally reconsiders us and our place in the ecosystem and beyond. We have evidently already expressed our curiosities and concerns culturally through film and literature in the better part of the last century, from works depicting A.I. as benevolent entities and transcendent guardians to dystopian existential threats. In any case, it will inevitably be an intensely dramatic paradigm shift not unlike the transitions from the hunter-gatherers into agricultural revolution and 12,000 years later into the industrial revolution. This thesis speculates on the roles and potentialities of artificial Super-Intelligence as not only architectural tools but co-existing agents that will reform the way we think and live. Based on the works of futurists the likes of Ray Kurzweil and Arthur C. Clarke, we examine the historical progression, depictions and implications of this exponentially expanding nature of cognitive technologies and its effects on the relationship between living environments of the future and its inhabitants. This investigation proposes an ultramodern perspective on the proposition of an autonomous AI system that is not only capable of permutationally shaping architectural territories according to our needs and desires, but also challenging our pre-existing notions of anthropocentric urban ecologies. Delving into a hypothesis of Auckland in the year 2052, drawing upon the memories of the Waitemata harbour and imagining it implemented within this futurist narrative. By exploring both digital and analogue workflows we can synthesize known A.I. design methodologies with speculative and philosophical implications informed by the works of Kurzweil and other futurists, and distill into the urban condition reconfigured ideals of a dynamic and cognitive approach to public amenities in the late 21st century. The Architectural language will describe temporal infrastructural solutions proposed by human innovators and augmented by Super-intelligent systems which would account for the possible challenges encountered within the next half decade, such as overpopulation and climate change.

As cities compete globally, the Smart City has been touted as the important new strategic driver for regeneration and growth. Smart Cities are employing information and communication technologies in the quest for sustainable economic development and the fostering of new forms of collective life. This has made the Smart City an essential focus for engineers, architects, urban designers, urban planners, and politicians, as well as businesses such as CISCO, IBM and Siemens. Despite its broad appeal, few comprehensive books have been devoted to the subject so far, and even fewer have tried to relate it to cultural issues and to assume a truly critical stance by trying to decipher its consequences on urban space and experience. This cultural and critical lens is all the more important as the Smart City is as much an ideal permeated by Utopian beliefs as a concrete process of urban transformation. This ideal possesses a strong self-fulfilling character: our cities will become ‘Smart’ because we want them to. This book opens with an examination of the technological reality on which Smart Cities are built, from the chips and sensors that enable us to monitor what happens within the infrastructure to the smartphones that connect individuals. Through these technologies, the urban space appears as activated, almost sentient. This activation generates two contrasting visions: on the one hand, a neo-cybernetic ambition to steer the city in the most efficient way; and on the other, a more bottom-up, participative approach in which empowered individuals invent new modes of cooperation. A thorough analysis of these two trends reveals them to be complementary. The Smart City of the near future will result from their mutual adjustment. In this process, urban space plays a decisive role. Smart Cities are contemporary with a ‘spatial turn’ of the digital. Based on key technological developments like geo-localisation and augmented reality, the rising importance of space explains the strategic role of mapping in the evolution of the urban experience. Throughout this exploration of some of the key dimensions of the Smart City, this book constantly moves from the technological to the spatial as well as from a critical assessment of existing experiments to speculations on the rise of a new form of collective intelligence. In the future, cities will become smarter in a much more literal way than what is often currently assumed.
