Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2018 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 2,3, Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Arbeit stützt sich vor allem auf die neusachlichen Romane „Das kunstseidene Mädchen“ von Irmgard Keun und „Kleiner Mann – was nun?“ von Hans Fallada. Zu der Bewertung der Entwicklungen der Rolle der „neuen“ Frau wurde entsprechende Sekundärliteratur zur Untersuchung herangezogen. Zu Beginn der Arbeit sollen die neuen Frauenbilder der Weimarer Republik erläutert werden. Wie viele neue Frauenbilder gab es und wodurch wurden sie ausgelöst? Was will die neue Frau und wie hat sie auszusehen? Im folgenden Kapitel steht „Das kunstseidene Mädchen“ von Irmgard Keun im Fokus. Welches Frauenbild verkörpert die Protagonistin Doris und welche Übereinstimmungen gibt es zu den vorangegangenen Untersuchungen zum Bild der Neuen Frau? Im darauffolgenden Kapitel liegt der Schwerpunkt auf den Roman „Kleiner Mann – was nun?“ von Hans Fallada. Inwieweit entspricht Lämmchen dem Bild der Neuen Frau und welche Auswirkungen hat die Emanzipation der Frau auf das junge Paar? Anschließend folgt ein Ausblick auf den Roman „Fabian“ von Erich Kästner. Dieser neusachliche Roman hat einen Mann als Protagonisten und viele verschiedene Frauennebenrollen. Diese sollen auf die unterschiedlichen Frauentypen der Weimarer Republik übertragen und bewertet werden. Zum Schluss wird im Fazit eine allgemeine Auswertung dessen sein, was die jeweiligen Romane als Zeugnisse für die historische Entwicklung der neuen Frau hergeben. Bewegen sie sich nah an der Realität oder zeigen sie eine ganz andere Wirklichkeit?

Es wurden ihnen politische Rechte eingeräumt und sie konnten in der Öffentlichkeit ganz anders in Erscheinung treten als jemals zuvor. Zwar hatte man in der Bohème auch schon vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg immer wieder vereinzelt ‚neue’ Frauen als „berufliche Rarität oder als literarische Konvention“ beobachten können. Die jungen Frauen der zwanziger Jahre, die den eigentlichen Typus der ‚Neuen Frau’ verkörperten, waren jedoch ein Massenphänomen. Als einer der „Weimarer Prototypen des Romans der Neuen Frau“ wird in der Forschung der Roman Das kunstseidene Mädchen von Irmgard Keun angesehen. Kennzeichnend für Romane über die Neue Frau ist, dass deren Protagonistinnen Positionen moderner Weiblichkeit ausloten, mit den populären Bildern der Neuen Frau spielen und mit einer Reihe von Weiblichkeitsentwürfen experimentieren. Dies am Beispiel des Romans Das kunstseidene Mädchen zu untersuchen, soll Ziel dieser Arbeit sein. Dabei soll es vor allem darum gehen, die neuen Werte und die (scheinbare) Unabhängigkeit der Neuen Frau kritisch zu hinterfragen.

Abortion in the Weimar Republic is a compelling subject since it provoked public debates and campaigns of an intensity rarely matched elsewhere. It proved so explosive because populationist, ecclesiastical and political concerns were heightened by cultural anxieties of a modernity in crisis. Based on an exceptionally rich source material (e.g., criminal court cases, doctors’ case books, personal diaries, feature films, plays and literary works), this study explores different attitudes and experiences of those women who sought to terminate an unwanted pregnancy and those who helped or hindered them. It analyzes the dichotomy between medical theory and practice, and questions common assumptions, i.e. that abortion was “a necessary evil,” which needed strict regulation and medical control; or that all back-street abortions were dangerous and bad. Above all, the book reveals women’s own voices, frequently contradictory and ambiguous: having internalized medical ideas they often also adhered to older notions of reproduction which opposed scientific approaches.

Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Thema „Das Frauenbild der 20er Jahre“ und untersucht diesen Themenkomplex anhand der literarischen Positionen Irmgard Keuns, Marieluise Fleißers und Mela Hartwigs. Sie analysiert Irmgard Keuns Roman „Das kunstseidene Mädchen“, Marieluise Fleißers Erzählung „Ein Pfund Orangen“ und Mela Hartwigs Roman „Das Weib ist ein Nichts“. Da mit den zwanziger Jahren eine Zeit beginnt, in der die Stellung der Frau immer mehr an Bedeutung gewinnt, betrachtet die Arbeit zunächst die Rolle der Frau in der Gesellschaft. Dabei wird auf das Bild der ‚Neuen Frau’ Bezug genommen und hiermit verbunden, auf den enormen Aufschwung der Angestelltenkultur. Die Betrachtungen gehen ebenfalls auf die Literatur der Zeit ein und klären anhand einiger Beispiele die Frage, inwieweit weibliche Angestellte und ein neues Frauenbild Thema der zeitgenössischen Literatur werden und welche Funktion diese dabei übernimmt. In einem abschließenden Resümee werden die drei Positionen der unterschiedlichen Autorinnen in einen übergeordneten, abstrakten Rahmen gestellt und es wird noch einmal reflektiert welche Konzepte von Weiblichkeit in den drei Werken verhandelt werden.

Ihre eigenen Erlebnisse sind teilweise in ihre Werke mit eingeflossen, weshalb ich den Werdegang der Autorinnen, vor allem von Keun und Fleißer, etwas ausführlicher schildern werde. Mit der Betrachtung der drei verschiedenen Autorinnen im Kontext ihrer Zeit werde ich jeweils ein Werk ihrer Schaffensperiode auf Merkmale der ‚Neuen Frau’ untersuchen, den Stellenwert des Mannes und schlussendlich, welche unterschiedlichen Konzepte von Weiblichkeit verhandelt werden.

In spite of having been short-lived, "Weimar" has never lost its fascination. Until recently the Weimar Republic's place in German history was primarily defined by its catastrophic beginning and end - Germany's defeat in 1918 and the Nazi seizure of power in 1933; its history seen mainly in terms of politics and as an arena of flawed decisions and failed compromises. However, a flourishing of interdisciplinary scholarship on Weimar political culture is uncovering arenas of conflict and change that had not been studied closely before, such as gender, body politics, masculinity, citizenship, empire and borderlands, visual culture, popular culture and consumption. This collection offers new perspectives from leading scholars in the disciplines of history, art history, film studies, and German studies on the vibrant political culture of Germany in the 1920s. From the traumatic ruptures of defeat, revolution, and collapse of the Kaiser's state, the visionaries of Weimar went on to invent a republic, calling forth new citizens and cultural innovations that shaped the republic far beyond the realms of parliaments and political parties. Kathleen Canning is Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of History, Women's Studies, and German at the University of Michigan. She is the author of Languages of Labor and Gender: Female Factory Work in Germany, 1850-1914 (2nd ed., University of Michigan Press 2002) and Gender History in Practice: Historical Perspectives on Bodies, Class, and Citizenship (Cornell University Press 2006). She is currently a board member of Central European History and the Journal of Modern History. Kerstin Barndt is Associate Professor of German Studies at the University of Michigan. She is the author of Sentiment und Sachlichkeit. Der Roman der Neuen Frau in der Weimarer Republik (Böhlau 2004) and several articles on German modernism, gender theory, and the history of reading. Her current book project Exhibition Time. History, Memory, and Aesthetics in Germany focuses on contemporary exhibition culture against the backdrop of national unifi cation, migration, and deindustrialization. Kristin McGuire is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at the University of Michigan and co-Director of the Global Feminisms Project based at the University of Michigan. She is the co-author of Global Feminisms through a Virtual Archive (SIGNS 2010). She is currently working on a book manuscript, Activism, Intimacy and Selfhood which offers a comparative historical analysis of women activists in Germany and Poland from 1890-1918; and co-editing a volume of translated essays entitled Women on Nietzsche, Gender, and Sexuality: An Anthology of European Women's Writings, 1880-1920. "Reveals how socialist discourses and psychoanalytic ideas shaped the modern models of motherhood envisioned by left-wing and socially critical women writers working in the Weimar press and literary spheres. Women's experiences and opportunities in the Weimar Republic (1919-1933) were shaped by tensions between advances in women's rights and widespread adherence to conservative notions of gender roles and women's maternal duty. This book explores these tensions, which were particularly pronounced on the political left, by analyzing socialist and socially critical women writers' interventions in contemporary debates on gender and women's role in society. For women in Weimar Germany, writing represented a subversive medium through which they could individualize reproductive politics and imagine modern models of mothering. Relatable and aspirational mothering practices and mother figures feature in the literary and journalistic texts examined in this book. Theoretical and instructional works (by Alice Rèuhle-Gerstel and Henny Schumacher) and examples from the Social Democratic women's magazine Frauenwelt demonstrate how women writers adopted and adapted emerging psychological ideas to position their texts as modern and authoritative. A close analysis of critically neglected didactic texts (by Hermynia Zur Mèuhlen, Maria Leitner, Elfriede Brèuning, and Else Kienle) and socially critical popular fiction (by Irmgard Keun, Vicki Baum, and Gabriele Tergit) exposes how women writers envisaged models of motherhood and family that were compatible with their political beliefs and modern lifestyles.
