This book brings together interdisciplinary scholars from history, theology, folklore, ethnology and meteorology to examine how David Cranz’s Historie von Grönland (1765) resonated in various disciplines, periods and countries. Collectively the contributors demonstrate the reach of the book beyond its initial purpose as a record of missionary work, and into secular and political fields beyond Greenland and Germany. The chapters also reveal how the book contributed to broader discussions and conceptualizations of Greenland as part of the Atlantic world. The interdisciplinary scope of the volume allows for a layered reading of Cranz’s book that demonstrates how different meanings could be drawn from the book in different contexts and how the book resonated throughout time and space. It also makes the broader argument that the construction of the Artic in the eighteenth century broadened our understanding of the Atlantic.

Am 2. April 2017 jährt sich zum 200. Mal der Todestag von Johann Heinrich Jung-Stilling. Geboren 1740 im Siegerland als Sohn eines frommen Dorfschneiders, legte er einen einzigartigen Karriereweg zum Mediziner, Hochschulprofessor für Wirtschaftslehre und Hofrat zurück. Goethe, den Jung-Stilling während seines Medizinstudiums in Straßburg kennengelernte, regte ihn zur Abfassung seiner Autobiographie an, überarbeitete den ersten Teil und beförderte ihn zum Druck. Dies war der Anfang einer Schriftstellerlaufbahn. Neben Lehrbüchern verfasste Jung-Stilling in großem Umfang Literatur für das Volk – Romane, Erzählungen und vor allem religiöse Schriften. In einer zunehmend religionskritischen Umwelt wollte er eine Frömmigkeit verteidigen, wie er sie aus pietistischen Traditionen kannte. Dieser Band bietet in fünf thematischen Rubriken Texte von Jung-Stilling, die eine Annäherung an sein Wirken und sein Selbstverständnis als religiöser Volksschriftsteller ermöglichen. Born in 1740 in Siegerland as the son of a pious village tailor, Jung-Stilling build a unique career as a physician, university professor of economics and "Hofrat". In Straßburg where he studied medicine he met Goethe who inspired him to write his autobiography. This was the beginning of his career as a writer. Besides textbooks Jung-Stilling wrote literature for the people on a large scale: novels, stories and above all pious literature. In an increasingly religions-critical context he wanted to defend a piety which he knew well from Pietism. The volume presents, in five thematic sections, texts by Jung-Stilling which allow an approach to his work and self-image as a religious popular writer.

English summary: This second volume of essays by Johannes Wallmann contains 20 individual studies of the church history of the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly of the history of pietism and primarily of Jakob Spener, the founder of pietism. The essays selected for this work deal with various subjects but in their entirety they show pietism in a new light. The subjects range from the concept of piety, the piety crisis in the 17th century, the understanding of the Bible, prayer as a form of pietistic spiritual welfare, the relationship between pietism and spiritualism and pietism and Tridentine Catholicism and the relationship between pietism and Prussianism.
