IntroductionSepp, Hansestadt the Apprentice is book #2 in a series of fiction writing describing a section of Sepp's Odyssey during the past century. It portrays Sepp's growing up years from age thirteen to twenty-two. Sepp's mother, Erika had been handed her expulsion notice in December of 1948 and she left March of 1949 what used to be the family farm in the Sudetenland. With the help of a green-eyed soldier, Erika made it just in time to her train to the West. Here, in the American Zone, Erika, in desperate need for shoes, fell stepping off the train into a shoemaker's arms. In January of 1950 her son, Sepp was born in the Frankenland. His parents, who had had no plans to raise another child, did their very best. Sepp went to school for eight years in Kleinerort 4, followed by 4 more years of Oberealschule in Unterschwarzenberg to age 13. Then it was time for him to stand on his own two feet. The 13-year-old Sepp went to the 'Arbeitsamt' (German Federal Employment Agency) in Unterschwarzenberg. Here on his first try, Sepp got offered an apprenticeship as a waiter in Altestadt at a most famous Luxury Hotel. He tried but failed, only to regroup and on his second attempt was accepted as a waiter apprentice in the Hansestadt. After a 12-hour long train ride, upon arrival at his new workplace, Sepp knew he had it made. Sepp was willing to do whatever it might take to stay and call the Ferry-Restaurant-Café&Bar his home for good. He was not going back to Kleinerort. It is here at the Ferry-Restaurant-Café&Bar that Sepp learns all about working and living life from Herr Krause, Herr Braun, Karl-Heinz, Herr Kohl, Herr Arno, Udo, and Herr Wagner, Slavka, and Luise -- not just some names for Old Times sake -- but real people. Each one of these people helps to shape Sepp's outlook on how to enjoy work and survive life in the hospitality world. Sepp becomes a product of his surroundings and the society. Sepp's life changes, as his motives, reasons, and purpose change daily. He loves having his own room in the attic, the good food, the friendly people, indoor plumbing, shower and all those many things he never had before. As time goes on, he learns a new behavior by copying the style and conduct, the manners and actions as seen by his superiors, co-workers, buddies, and friends. With Karl-Heinz' help he gets introduced to manhood. Added to the three hospitality apprenticeships, Sepp receives hands on training in the sciences of sexuality. For the reader it is important to know and understand that the age of consent in Germany is 14, and any person mentioned in this book over the age of 21 did not exploit the 14 - 15 year old Sepp. He was seeking out and welcoming the adventures and temptation, and fully enjoyed all situations which offered him sexual education and study-time.

Nearly forgotten by history, this is the story of the Wereth Eleven, African-American soldiers who fought courageously for freedom in WWII—only to be ruthlessly executed by Nazi troops during the Battle of the Bulge. Their story was almost forgotten by history. Now known as the Wereth Eleven, these brave African-American soldiers left their homes to join the Allied effort on the front lines of WWII. As members of the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion, they provided crucial fire support at the Siege of Bastogne. Among the few who managed to escape the Nazi’s devastating Ardennes Offensive, they found refuge in the small village of Wereth, Belgium. A farmer and supporter of the Allies took the exhausted and half-starved men into his home. When Nazi authorities learned of their whereabouts, they did not take the soldiers prisoner, but subjected them to torture and execution in a nearby field. Despite their bravery and sacrifice, these eleven soldiers were omitted from the final Congressional War Crimes report of 1949. For seventy years, their files—marked secret—gathered dust in the National Archive. But in 1994, at the site of their execution, a memorial was dedicated to the Wereth Eleven and all African-American soldiers who fought in Europe. Drawing on firsthand interviews with family members and fellow soldiers, The Lost Eleven tells the complete story of these nearly forgotten soldiers, their valor in battle and their tragic end. The child has existed in cinema since the Lumière Brothers filmed their babies having messy meals in Lyons, but it is only quite recently that scholars have paid serious attention to her/his presence on screen. Scholarly discussion is now of the highest quality and of interest to anyone concerned not only with the extent to which adult cultural conversations invoke the figure of the child, but also to those interested in exploring how film cultures can shift questions of agency and experience in relation to subjectivity. Childhood and Nation in World Cinema recognizes that the range of films and scholarship is now sufficiently extensive to invoke the world cinema mantra of pluri-vocal and pluri-central attention and interpretation. At the same time, the importance of the child in figuring ideas of nationhood is an undiminished tic in adult cultural and social consciousness. Either the child on film provokes claims on the nation or the nation claims the child. Given the waning star of national film studies, and the widely held and serious concerns over the status of the nation as a meaningful cultural unit, the point here is not to assume some extraordinary pre-social geopolitical empathy of child and political entity. Rather, the present collection observes how and why and whether the cinematic child is indeed aligned to concepts of modern nationhood, to concerns of the State, and to geo-political organizational themes and precepts.

This is the story of Sepp Scheibenzuber, a simple man. For most of his early life, Sepp didnt make choices. Choices were made for him. At 13, he wanted to continue his schooling, but his parents had other ideas and soon he was toiling on the farms of Bavaria. Thereafter, he knew nothing else and so continued working on the land until he was drafted into the German Army. There was no question that he would go. He had never heard of anyone even contemplating avoiding the draft. And so within months he was fighting a war against Frenchman, a people whom he knew little about other than the Nazis said they were evil. And in the following years, he fought the Russians and suffered almost unendurable depravation. But somehow Sepp endured. He obeyed. He did what he was told along with millions of other Germans. It never even entered his mind that he had an alternative. All the choices were made for him, except one. He wanted to survive.

New Contexts For Eighteenth Century British Fiction written by Christopher D. Johnson and has been published by University of Delaware this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-18 with Literary Collections categories.

New Contexts for Eighteenth-Century British Fiction is a collection of thirteen essays honoring Professor Jerry C. Beasley, who retired from the University of Delaware in 2005. The essays, written by friends, collaborators and former students, reflect the scholarly interests that defined Professor Beasley's career and point to new directions of critical inquiry. The initial essays, which discuss Tobias Smollett, Elizabeth Singer Rowe, and Samuel Richardson, suggest new directions in biographical writing, including the intriguing discourse of 'life writing' explored by Paula Backscheider. Subsequent essays enrich understandings of eighteenth-century fiction by examining lesser-known works by Jane Barker, Eliza Haywood, and Charlotte Lennox. Many of the essays, especially those that focus on Smollett, use political pamphlets, material artifacts, and urban legends to place familiar novels in new contexts. The collection's final essay demonstrates the vital importance of bibliographic study.

I was born in 1926 in a town in Silesia, Germanys south eastern Province bordering Poland to the east and Czechoslovakia to the south. That is how it was for 2000 years until 1945 when Hitlers war ended, and our Heimat Schlesien no longer existed. The peace treaty demanded that Silesia be annexed to Poland meaning the eviction of our people. Six months after my 17th birthday, shortly before Christmas 1943, I was called up to military service and after my training sent to Italy, where five months later, on Sunday 4th June 1944 I was captured by the U.S. Army just outside Rome. They brought us to Norfolk Virginia from where a train journey took us to a POW camp in Oklahoma, moving soon to Fort Bliss, El Paso. In autumn 1945 fifty POWs travelled by bus to the Napa Valley to pick tomatoes, prunes, and work in the vineyards, and after New Year 1946 south to pick cotton. In early March 1946 we received black-dyed U.S. Army uniforms, boarded a troop ship in Oakland and were sent back to Europe via the Panama Canal, to arrive three weeks later in Liverpool, UK. From there we travelled by train to the north of Scotland where now over sixty years later, I continue to live. My book will tell my journey.
