En este trabajo se analiza la distinción entre ser y estar en español; en particular, los diferentes usos, valores, y significados de estos dos verbos. Para ello, se estudian las restricciones aspectuales que imponen sobre sus posibles complementos, ya sean éstos adjetivos, participios, sintagmas preposicionales, adverbios, sustantivos o gerundios. Asimismo, se ofrece un análisis comparativo con otros dominios sintácticos, como los que constituyen las construcciones absolutas, los elementos predicativos o los verbos pseudocopulativos, sensibles a restricciones aspectuales similares. En el libro se repasan, además, los logros obtenidos en el análisis de ser y estar en los últimos años. Por todo ello y por la clara intención divulgativa con que ha sido redactado puede ser de utilidad a un público amplio: profesores de enseñanza media, estudiantes universitarios de primer ciclo, profesores y estudiantes de español como lengua extranjera y, en general, a cualquier persona interesada en la gramática del español.

"Si hay dos verbos en la lengua española que causan verdaderos quebraderos de cabeza a estudiantes extranjeros de todas las latitudes, esos son, sin duda "ser" y "estar", y no porque sean especialmente difíciles en su uso, sino porque muchas de las lenguas que se hablan en el mundo no disponen de dos verbos de connotaciones similares, sino de uno solo que hace la vez de los dos en muchos casos. Así, en francés, existe el verbo "être" que puede ser tanto ser como estar. Y lo mismo ocurre en inglés con el verbo "to be" y en alemán con el verbo "sein". Cuando se tiene un solo concepto para expresar dos y todos sus usos, la cosa no es del toda fácil, no tan fácil al menos como pasar de dos conceptos a solo uno. Así, un hablante de español no tiene dificultades para aprender "to be" o "être" o "sein" y usarlos con relativa facilidad y corrección en un breve período de tiempo, salvo usos idiomáticos, por supuesto, pero no ocurre lo mismo con un inglés, un francés o un alemán a la hora de aprender estos dos verbos españoles. .."
