About the Book This work is a result of several decades of material uncovered through an archival dive during recent Covid-19 mandated home confinement. The opportunity for personal reflections during this period led the author to contemplate his life’s journey. In so doing he wonders aloud; was the meandering route traveled between early island life to retirement an accident or was it a path carefully laid out by the Master Designer? His hope is that the stories and incidents included in this work will enable each reader to not only contemplate this bit of life’s mystery, but also like him, find similar affirmation regarding their individual life's path. About the Author C. M. Phillip is a boomer born on the 108-square mile Caribbean Island of Antigua. He is the younger of two brothers, among eight siblings born to parents Amaletha and Solomon Phillip, who are both deceased. After completion of his early education in his birthplace, he migrated to the United States in pursuit of higher education. This pursuit paved a path for a career in Public Health. Following his recent retirement, he settled in Scottsdale, Arizona with his wife Annette. From this location, they both continue to pursue their passion for hospitality and mentoring, while enjoying their love for the outdoors and travel. In addition to family commitments, the author continues to carve out space and time to volunteer as a teacher, participate in various local choirs and musical ensembles, while continuing to train for his next marathon. Phillip's travels include various global ventures with his wife Annette. Together they have journeyed throughout the Caribbean, North, South and Central America, Asia (to include Thailand, Vietnam &; Japan) and the African Continent (including stops in South Africa, Robben Island and Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe). Also, the Pacific islands and most of the United States and its major cities. This writer will tell you that his journey from the islands, through the South and East Coasts, and finally being led to exchange his slice of Paradise with its 365 beaches, to enjoy the beauty of the McDowell Mountain Range, has been no accident.

The case follows Google LLC (Google), a pioneer in using serendipity as a workplace design for increasing chance interaction among employees as a means of innovation. Serendipity-based workplace design at Google resulted in the ideation and launch of famous products such as Google News and Street View. Apart from Google, several other tech companies, including Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Zappos.com, and other Silicon Valley players, also adopted serendipitous workplace design practices to enhance innovation chances. According to experts, serendipity was not meant for path-breaking innovation and generally involved small incremental improvements. During the COVID-19 pandemic, as companies made employees work from home, concerns regarding serendipity in a virtual environment remained. How could Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, combat serendipity challenges in a virtual work environment?

"When Raymond Boyce arrived in New Zealand in the 1950's at the invitation of the founder of the New Zealand Players, Richard Campion, New Zealand Theatre was in the visual doldrums. Amateur theatre post war was artistically controlled by the famous Samuel French editions of plays, with photos of the settings and detailed notes of the original overseas productions. Richard and his wife Edith had been studying theatre in London and returned to New Zealand inspired by the invention and ideas of the London theatre scene, and determined to establish a truly National Theatre company in their homeland. Raymond was suggested by the famous London stage designer Percy Harris as the ideal man to assist Richard with the visual side of his dream. The theatre scene lead Raymond to Ballet wuth Poul Gnatt in his NZ Ballet, and Donald Munro and his NZ Opera Company. He brought with him colour and invention, based on a keen knowledge of theatre and Design in its many forms. He became an accepted expert for architects involved in developing theatrical space, giving advice that was not always taken. This lead to his Involvement in the design of Downstage Theatre in Wellington, which was a theatrical space that really challenged directors and designers. Raymond later became Head of Design for EXPO 70 in Osaka and the Globe Curtain Project. Nobody has had a greater influence on theatrical design in NZ than Raymond and this film traces the development of professional theatre in NZ through his work. Raymond puts his success down to Serendipity as you will see, but it's far more than that. It's talent and skill." -- Container.

Chance, luck, and good fortune are the usual go-to descriptors of serendipity, a phenomenon aptly often coupled with famous anecdotes of accidental discoveries in engineering and science in modern history such as penicillin, Teflon, and Post-it notes. Serendipity, however, is evident in many fields of research, in organizations, in everyday life—and there is more to it than luck implies. While the phenomenon is strongly associated with in person interactions with people, places, and things, most attention of late has focused on its preservation and facilitation within digital information environments. Serendipity's association with unexpected, positive user experiences and outcomes has spurred an interest in understanding both how current digital information environments support serendipity and how novel approaches may be developed to facilitate it. Research has sought to understand serendipity, how it is manifested in people's personality traits and behaviors, how it may be facilitated in digital information environments such as mobile applications, and its impacts on an individual, an organizational, and a wider level. Because serendipity is expressed and understood in different ways in different contexts, multiple methods have been used to study the phenomenon and evaluate digital information environments that may support it. This volume brings together different disciplinary perspectives and examines the motivations for studying serendipity, the various ways in which serendipity has been approached in the research, methodological approaches to build theory, and how it may be facilitated. Finally, a roadmap for serendipity research is drawn by integrating key points from this volume to produce a framework for the examination of serendipity in digital information environments.
