Sergio Corazzini (Roma, 6 febbraio 1886 - Roma, 17 giugno 1907) è stato un poeta italiano appartenente al crepuscolarismo romano del primo decennio del Novecento.La sua poesia è focalizzata su "piccole cose", dietro le quali non emergono valori segreti, ma si nasconde il vuoto, tipico dei poeti crepuscolari tra i quali Corazzini fu annoverato. I suoi versi esprimono da un lato un malinconico desiderio per quella vita che la malattia gli negava, dall'altro un nostalgico ritrarsi dall'esistenza presente, proprio perché avara di prospettive future.In Desolazione del povero poeta sentimentale si esprime tutta la poetica di Corazzini dove il "piccolo fanciullo che piange" proclama l'impossibilità di essere chiamato "poeta", affermando così, per la prima volta, la concezione della poetica crepuscolare.

The blending of people and living machines is a central element in the futurist "reconstruction of the universe." However, prior to the futurist break, a group of early-twentieth-century poets, later dubbed crepuscolari (crepusculars), had already begun an attack against the dominant cultural system, using their poetry as the locus in which useless little objects clashed with the traditional poetry of human greatness and stylistic perfection. The Quiet Avant-Garde draws from a number of twenty-first-century theories - vital materialism, object-oriented ontology, and environmental humanities - as well as Bruno Latour's criticism of modernity to illustrate how the crepuscular movement sabotaged the modern mindset and launched the counter-discourse of the Italian avant-garde by blurring the line dividing people from "things." This liminal poetics, at the crossroad of tradition, modernism, and the avant-garde, acted as the initiator of the ethical and environmental transition from a universe subjected to humans to human-thing co-agency. This book proposes a contemporary reading of Italian twentieth-century movements and offers a foothold for scholars outside Italian studies to access authors who are still unexplored in North American literature.

This is the first interdisciplinary book to critically examine the ongoing phenomenon of disguising contagious disease in Italy from Unification to the present. The book explores how governments, public opinion, social entities and cultural production have avoided or sublimated contagion during cholera, typhoid, syphilis, malaria, HIV and COVID-19 to impose narratives of the nation’s healthy body in Italy and its colonies. Examples range from a tuberculosis sanatorium in Capri that masked as a luxury hotel and hideaway for queer couples to an obscure but talented professor who found a new cure for syphilis; from denial of disease in governmental actions to sublimated representations in Italian art, literature and films such as Luchino Visconti’s cinematic adaptation of Thomas Mann’s Death in Venice to a sociological study of the need to include fragile figures based on the lessons of COVID-19. Intended for scholars, students and general readers interested in the history of medicine, political and cultural history, and Italian studies, this volume shows how contagious diseases clash with the official narrative of emerging modernized urban settings and challenge the desire for political and economic stability.
