Excerpt from Sermons for the Christian Year, Vol. 3 Yes, my brethren, it is so decreed and appointed. Nevertheless, there is just one way, and no other, of escaping entirely this awful judgment. That way has been pointed out to you in the gospel which you have heard read Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Is it possible, my dear brethren? Yes, it is possible; and not only possible, but in fallibly certain, for the very Judge Who will sit in judgment upon us, Jesus Christ Himself, has said it. He has solemnly declared that if we do not judge our neighbour, we shall not be judged ourselves. Ah! My brethren, let us try to realize now what will be our feelings at the day of judgment. We shall then look eagerly enough for some way of escaping that dreadful judgment. But we shall look in vain; for it will then be too late. But now we need not look in vain; such an escape is not only possible, but easy, in the way that has been pointed out to you. Oh! What a boon is this! How easily purchased! That awful judgment, from which we have so much, in fact everything, to fear, which the saints themselves have feared, will be altogether omitted in our favour, if only we will spare our neighbour the rebuke of our own judgment. And yet, who is there to be found who fulfills the requisite condition? Who is there, on the contrary, who will not have to sustain severe judgment by reason of his merciless judg ment of others. For is not rash judgment the be setting sin of our lives? Let us, then, consider the malice of this sin; and first, what right have we to judge our neighbour? None Whatever; we have not the shadow of a right. Sin is an offence against God. It is, then, for God alone to judge the sinner and punish the sin. And this would be the case even when we are the sufferers by our neighbour's fault. If my neighbour does anything to injure me, the sin is not committed against me, but against God. I have, therefore, no cause of animosity against the culprit on account of the injury; seeing that I have deserved a thousand times more than this. We ought to look upon the offending party as a minister of God's justice, whose intervention God uses for our correction. If we did but regard the matter in this light; instead of feeling resentment we should rather rejoice at having to suffer something in satisfaction for our sins, and at being able to imitate, however distantly, our crucia fied Redeemer, Who, when He was reviled, did not revile; when He suffered, He threatened not; but delivered Himself to him that judged Him unjustly. Excerpt from Sermons for the Christian Year, Vol. 1 It was thought well to give so brilliant a student the benefit of a course at Rome, and so after his re turn from his holiday, he was sent by Bishop Grant to the venerable English College there to complete his ecclesiastical studies. Here he gained a reputa tion for high ability, and in due time took his Doc tor's degree. He was ordained deacon by Cardinal Patrizi, at St. John Lateran, in 1863, and priest on Holy Saturday, 1864. He said his first Mass in the Chapel of the English College on Easter Sunday. In September, 1863, during the summer vacation, he had made another long walking tour in the form of a pilgrimage to Loreto. He then Visited Assisi, Perugia, Bologna and even Milan, returning by Florence and Orvieto. On this occasion, too, he visited famous monastic sanctuaries of Vallombrosa and Camaldoli. In 1864 he received the Doctor's cap and ring from Father Perrone S. J., and in September left Rome for England. On this journey, he first went South, visiting Naples and Benevento, and making a pil grimage to the tomb of St. Benedict at Monte Cassino. He retraced his steps along the Adriatic Gulf to Ravenna, and thence by F errara, Padua and Venice, through the Austrian Tyrol to Munich, and so back to London. He was now placed on the Professorial staff of St. Edmund's College, where he remained four years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Christ in the Christian Year and in the Life of Man: Sermons for Laymen's Reading This volume owes its existence to a letter received by the author, some months ago, from a presbyter in one of our western dioceses highly esteemed in the Church at large and of wide experience in its service. He believes that there is still need of printed sermons to be read in churches, and gives some reasons why the present publication should be made. Although it would not have been undertaken but for his advice and request, he is in no manner responsible for what the book contains. This suggestion having been adopted, it became necessary to accept whatever limitations it imposed both as to matter and method. Preferences which otherwise might be reasonably indulged, as respects topics and their treatment, lines of abstract thought and completeness of discussion, must to some extent be sacrificed. The frequent appearance of italics, a blemish on the pages to the eye of taste, is to be accounted for in the same way. It was also thought that to most readers certain obvious aspects and explanations of the principal Church-seasons might be supposed to be already sufficiently familiar. Let it be stated as according to the author's general conception of preaching that the aim in each individual discourse should be rather to give a sense of reality, in the particular truth there presented, than to exhaust subjects; to create in the hearers as vivid and abiding an impression as may be of some distinct department of Christian doctrine or duty, comprehending only such relations of idea and fact as seem most suitable to that end. Several important topics, pertaining to the domain of Church-instruction, are reserved for another volume. The author ought frankly to add that in allowing these sermons, many of which were written for a parochial ministry, to go to press, he could not bring himself to consider merely their use in lay reading. Excerpt from The Gospel in the Christian Year and in Christian Experience: Practical Sermons for the People, Advent to Trinity Our services have reminded us that we are entering to-day upon a new Christian Year, and the question naturally arises, Why should the Church observe a different year from the civil year, which begins a month later? Two reasons may be given. In the first place the Church seeks to impress upon her children the existence of a higher sphere than this temporal one - a world greater and fairer than this world of sense - and to write deeply upon their minds the fact that they stand in close and vital relation to that invisible, supernal sphere. The Christian Year embodies this thought. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sermons on Some Words of Christ With one exception, all the Sermons in this volume were preached in St. Paul's Cathedral, and nearly all were preached during Dr. Liddon's autumnal period of residence. They represent, therefore, a part of the teaching which, when no great festivals, no special season of the Christian year, controlled his choice of subjects, he prepared for a congregation whose wants and capacity he seemed to know with peculiar insight. And they illustrate, in their concentration of thought upon the Words of Christ, that characteristic of Tractarian theology which has been marked by Dean Church: "The great Name stood no longer for an abstract symbol of doctrine, but for a living Master, Who could teach as well as save. And not forgetting whither He had gone and what He was, the readers of Scripture now sought Him eagerly in those sacred records, where we can almost see and hear His going in and out among men." Excerpt from Sermons on the Litany, the Church One, Catholic, Apostolic and Holy, and the Communion of Saints: Reprinted From 'Sermons for the Christian Year' I have thought it might be good for us, my brethren, during this Epiphany season, to go over the Prayer book, by catechizing the children in it as we did with the Baptism service last year. And I have chosen the Litany; a portion of the service which I am sure must be very dear to us all, if we really are used to attend to the solemn service of God: and concerning which it was said by one of the best and wisest of our fore fathers, that it is 'a work, the absolute perfection whereof upbraideth with error or something worse those whom in all parts it doth not satisfy.'
