Increasing progress towards care in the community has brought the needs of people with learning disabilities who have challenging behaviour or mental health problems into sharper focus. Recent work in the Department of Health acknowledged the difficulties services experience in this area and indicated that service development was patchy and not always focused on meeting the needs of service users. This report analyses four local services and, from the findings, provides practical guidance from which other local services could be constructed.

Many students and trainees starting their work with people having mental retardation find it difficult to understand the similarities and uniqueness with which they present and the need for good management. There are a variety of service inputs and models to meet some of the mental health needs of children, young people and adults with learning disabilities. The services for such children are provided by specific Learning Disability psychiatric teams or by challenging behaviour teams. Generic child health and the voluntary sectors provide some elements of the service. However, the above mentioned services do not have a specific remit to look after all the physical and mental health needs of children and young people with learning disabilities and that has created a lack of coherence in service provision. Professionals working with these children, need a basic understanding of the needs, assessment methods and management techniques and this book tries to address those issues. There is some confusion with the terminology used for this client group. The Department of Health adopted learning disability as the term to identify the condition of mental retardation, the term used in the International Classification of Diseases 10th edition ICD-10. The Department of Education uses the term learning difficulty (Education Act 1993) and the American literature uses learning disability to refer to the ICD-10 term specific developmental disorders. In this book, in order to increase consistency we will use the ICD-10 terminology. The book is aimed to be a basic introductory book focussing on essential theory and practice of managing learning disability and mental health issues related to learning disability. The MCQ's and problem solving way of presentation is designed to avoid repetition and to help in focussed learning for examinations.

Many practitioners within health and social care come into contact with people with intellectual disabilities and want to work in ways that are beneficial to them by making reasonable adjustments in order to meet clients’ needs and expectations. Yet the health and wellbeing of people with learning disabilities continues to be a neglected area, where unnecessary suffering and premature deaths continue to prevail. This text provides a comprehensive insight into intellectual disability healthcare. It is aimed at those who are training in the field of intellectual disability nursing and also untrained practitioners who work in both health and social care settings. Divided into five sections, it explores how a wide range of biological, health, psychological and social barriers impact upon people with learning disability, and includes: Six guiding principles used to adjust, plan and develop meaningful and accessible health and social services Assessment, screening and diagnosis of intellectual disability across the life course Addressing lifelong health needs Psychological and psychotherapeutic issues, including sexuality, behavioural and mental health needs, bereavement, and ethical concerns. The changing professional roles and models of meeting the needs of people with intellectual and learning disabilities. Intellectual Disability in Health and Social Care provides a wide-ranging overview of what learning disability professionals’ roles are and provides insight into what health and social care practitioners might do to assist someone with intellectual disabilities when specific needs arise.

Learning Disability And Other Intellectual Impairments written by Louise Clark and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-04-30 with Medical categories.

Learning Disability and other Intellectual Impairments is the first book of its kind to explore the similarities and parallels between the needs of people with various types of intellectual impairments as they encounter health services. It not only looks at the shared issues from a bio-psycho-social perspective, but also discusses the transferable skills that a practitioner can develop working across these groups. It identifies the key skills and knowledge that professionals need in order to work with intellectually impaired patients whether they are in the hospital or at home. Rather than just focusing on people with learning disabilities, this text attempts to break down barriers and look at some of the issues associated with care and treatment of people who have intellectual impairment for a variety of reasons, including acquired brain injury, dementia and long-term mental health issues where cognition has been affected. Learning Disability and other Intellectual Impairments is suitable for health care practitioners at all levels who work with people who have intellectual impairments in their work and who wish to further develop their skills and knowledge to care for this neglected client group.
