¿Cómo se llevó a cabo el inventario para identificar futuros parques nacionales y reservas? ¿Cuáles desafíos se enfrentaron? ¿En qué estado se encontraban las áreas finalmente elegidas? Este libro es una memoria acerca del rol que entre 1971 y 1975 desempeñó el joven Christopher Vaughan, como biólogo de campo, en el recién creado Departamento de Parques Nacionales de Costa Rica, bajo la dirección de Mario Boza y de los miembros del Centro Científico Tropical, Drs. Joseph Tosi, Alexander Skutch y Leslie Holdridge. En forma amena, el autor narra sus múltiples peripecias durante los años de exploración de 26 potenciales parques nacionales y reservas, ya fuera solo o acompañado por guías u otros biólogos, al tiempo que describe las condiciones adversas que afectaban estas áreas: deforestación, quemas, asentamientos humanos, extracción de oro, cacería, explotación de empresas transnacionales e incluso un difícil acceso. De las áreas visitadas, más de 13 parques nacionales y reservas biológicas finalmente fueron creados entre 1972 y 1975, incluidos el Parque Recreativo Manuel Antonio (su nombre inicial), el Parque Nacional Chirripó, el Parque Nacional Corcovado, el Parque Nacional Rincón de la Vieja, el Monumento Nacional Guayabo, el Parque Nacional Barra Honda y cinco reservas biológicas. Esta obra, que tiene tanto de testimonio como de libro de aventuras, también ofrece una profusa cantidad de fotografías inéditas de la época. Esperamos que contribuya, como lo desea el autor, a que las generaciones futuras aprecien y se comprometan con la protección de estos tesoros invaluables, y con la increíble biodiversidad de Costa Rica, cuya conservación ha sido el reto de su vida.
