Os vikings, os chineses, os gregos, os portugueses mais tarde, se aventuraram nos mares, enfrentando a crença da época, de que as águas eram habitadas por monstros, de que o mundo era chato como uma panqueca e acabava em uma imensa cachoeira onde despencariam os navios que arrostavam os deuses. No mundo contemporâneo, a grande figura do aventureiro marítimo é Amyr Klink, que eu tive a honra de entrevistar, nos meus tempos de repórter especial da Revista Manchete, logo depois de sua chegada a Salvador, vindo de cem dias de travessia a remo, desde Dakar, no Senegal. Amyr Klink desafiou os mares. Martinês Rocha de Souza não fez tanto, mas desafiou os seus próprios limites; o que dá quase no mesmo. Aliás, não podemos dizer que Martinês é um herói, no sentido clássico da palavra. Não lutou batalhas, não chefiou exércitos, não criou um sistema político. Viveu a vida, com toda a intensidade, isso sim. O que faz dele um homem de coragem, um determinado que resistiu muitas vezes à vontade de desistir, quando seguidamente acossado pelo preconceito, pelo desprezo e pela descrença de pessoas próximas. Superou invejas com a filosofia cristã de perdoar e de dar a outra face, quando podia praticar a vingança. Encontrei Martinês quase por acaso. Ele procurou a União Brasileira de Escritores, para pedir que fosse indicado um escritor que pudesse corrigir seus textos e opinar sobre a maneira como a narrativa estava sendo conduzida. Interessei-me pessoalmente pelo trabalho, porque vi ali um jovem entusiasmado pela vida, com uma história pronta, apenas sem instrumentos de como organizar as ideias e apresentá-las corretamente. Reescrevi alguns pontos, mas não interferi. A forma de narrar é do autor e a sua maneira de ver o mundo também. Ele já havia pedido ajuda, antes, a amigos. Mas entendeu, e essa foi uma qualidade sua, que o relato precisava de mais imparcialidade, ou seja, precisava de um olhar isento. O resultado está aqui, e é claro que a história não terminou. Está aberta, como aberto está o coração desse jovem para o mundo. O relato que há neste livro é a história de uma pessoa comum, com qualidades, defeitos, pequenos vícios, humana, enfim. Mas ao mesmo tempo de uma pessoa equipada com a invencível determinação de ser feliz. Encontrou caminhos porque encontrou pessoas e encontrou pessoas porque encontrou caminhos. Onde havia estradas, perguntou como chegar até elas. Onde não havia estradas, foi aprender como construí-las. Esta é a história de um forte. Muita gente pode aprender com essas aventuras.
