Based on observation of sex education programmes and in-depth interviews with young people, the authors aim to understand more about adolescent's attitudes to sexuality and their sexual behaviour in order to develop policies which will meet their needs more appropriately and effectively. Issues covered in this interesting and accessible book include the ways adolescent informal culture affects sex education programmes and practice; the impact of gender inequality on sex education and safer sex behaviours; legislation and policy frameworks which effect sex education policies; the way young people see legislation and evaluate sex education programmes; and the impact health professionals can have in school sex education. The authors contend that the insights into the values and views that young people bring to bear on the sex education they receive should have an important role to play in the development of policy and practice of those involved in sex education work.

"It is difficult to imagine a juicier subject, or a more thoughtful, fluent, trustworthy guide for its exploration."—San Francisco Chronicle A chronicle of the two decades that noted sociologist Kristin Luker spent following parents in four America communities engaged in a passionate war of ideas and values, When Sex Goes to School explores a conflict with stakes that are deceptively simple and painfully personal. For these parents, the question of how their children should be taught about sex cuts far deeper than politics, religion, or even friendship. "The drama of this book comes from watching the exceptionally thoughtful Luker try to figure [sex education] out" (Judith Shulevitz, New York Times Book Review). In doing so, Luker also traces the origins of sex education from the turn-of-the-century hygienist movement to the marriage-obsessed 1950s and the sexual and gender upheavals of the 1960s. Her unexpected conclusions make it impossible to look at the intersections of the private and the political in the same way.

Originally published in 1993. This book takes the reader inside the contested issue of sex education by examining how a sexuality curriculum is actually taught to a ninth-grade health class and how it impacts on both the teacher and students. Drawing on observations and interviews with teachers, students, and other school personnel to capture the complexity and tension of lived classroom culture, this volume illustrates the dynamic, complex, and sometimes contradictory processes by which traditional versions of appropriate sexual behaviour and gender relations are legitimated as well as contested. The book describes in detail the classroom knowledge that is produced by the interactions between gendered, raced and classed students and teacher, the planned curriculum, and the social organisation of the school and community. The book also tackles the broader issues of how sex education should be taught and even whether it should be taught at all.

* What are effective teaching and learning styles for sex education? * How can the Health Promoting School create a context for sex education? * How do we interpret the legislation for sex education? This book will be important reading for secondary teachers of all disciplines. It provides a timely consolidation of educational thinking on sex education in schools today, including a consideration of the role of the Health Promoting School. It draws together recent research evidence to consider important aspects such as equal opportunities, school policy and practice, as well as identifying a moral and social framework for sex education. The practical guidelines are particularly helpful for trainee and newly qualified teachers and provide strategies for introducing, developing and re-visiting key areas of sex education. Some aspects, such as abortion and AIDS education, are highly sensitive areas for teachers to take on, demanding a particular awareness of the surrounding issues and of what might and can be taught in their own school. Crucially they demand a level of self awareness and self confidence for teachers to embark on a variety of appropriate teaching and learning strategies. A range of individual and group activities are provided which are aimed at both beginning and more experienced teachers to stimulate independent learning.

The Sex Education Debates written by Nancy Kendall and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Education categories.

Educating children and adolescents in public schools about sex is a deeply inflammatory act in the United States. Since the 1980s, intense political and cultural battles have been waged between believers in abstinence until marriage and advocates for comprehensive sex education. In The Sex Education Debates, Nancy Kendall upends conventional thinking about these battles by bringing the school and community realities of sex education to life through the diverse voices of students, teachers, administrators, and activists. Drawing on ethnographic research in five states, Kendall reveals important differences and surprising commonalities shared by purported antagonists in the sex education wars, and she illuminates the unintended consequences these protracted battles have, especially on teachers and students. Showing that the lessons that most students, teachers, and parents take away from these battles are antithetical to the long-term health of American democracy, she argues for shifting the measure of sex education success away from pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection rates. Instead, she argues, the debates should focus on a broader set of social and democratic consequences, such as what students learn about themselves as sexual beings and civic actors, and how sex education programming affects school-community relations.
