The 120 Days of Sodom is the Marquis de Sade's masterpiece. A still unsurpassed catalogue of sexual perversions and the first systematic exploration of the psychopathology of sex, it was written during Sade's lengthy imprisonment for sexual deviancy and blasphemy and then lost after the storming of the Bastille during the French Revolution in 1789. Later rediscovered, the manuscript remained unpublished until 1936 and is now introduced by Simone de Beauvoir's landmark essay, 'Must We Burn Sade?' Unique in its enduring capacity to shock and provoke, The 120 Days of Sodom must stand as one of the most controversial books ever written, and a fine example of the Libertine novel, a genre inspired by eroticism and anti-establishmentarianism, that effectively ended with the French Revolution.

Legacies Of Dachau written by Harold Marcuse and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-03-22 with History categories.

Auschwitz, Belsen, Dachau. These names still evoke the horrors of Nazi Germany around the world. This 2001 book takes one of these sites, Dachau, and traces its history from the beginning of the twentieth century, through its twelve years as Nazi Germany's premier concentration camp, to the camp's postwar uses as prison, residential neighborhood, and, finally, museum and memorial site. With superbly chosen examples and an eye for telling detail, Legacies of Dachau documents how Nazi perpetrators were quietly rehabilitated to become powerful elites, while survivors of the concentration camps were once again marginalized, criminalized and silenced. Combining meticulous archival research with an encyclopedic knowledge of the extensive literatures on Germany, the Holocaust, and historical memory, Marcuse unravels the intriguing relationship between historical events, individual memory, and political culture, to offer a unified interpretation of their interaction from the Nazi era to the twenty-first century.

Silent Stars written by Jeanine Basinger and has been published by Knopf this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-17 with Performing Arts categories.

From one of America's most renowned film scholars: a revelatory, perceptive, and highly readable look at the greatest silent film stars -- not those few who are fully appreciated and understood, like Chaplin, Keaton, Gish, and Garbo, but those who have been misperceived, unfairly dismissed, or forgotten. Here is Valentino, "the Sheik," who was hardly the effeminate lounge lizard he's been branded as; Mary Pickford, who couldn't have been further from the adorable little creature with golden ringlets that was her film persona; Marion Davies, unfairly pilloried in Citizen Kane; the original "Phantom" and "Hunchback," Lon Chaney; the beautiful Talmadge sisters, Norma and Constance. Here are the great divas, Pola Negri and Gloria Swanson; the great flappers, Colleen Moore and Clara Bow; the great cowboys, William S. Hart and Tom Mix; and the great lover, John Gilbert. Here, too, is the quintessential slapstick comedienne, Mabel Normand, with her Keystone Kops; the quintessential all-American hero, Douglas Fairbanks; and, of course, the quintessential all-American dog, Rin-Tin-Tin. This is the first book to anatomize the major silent players, reconstruct their careers, and give us a sense of what those films, those stars, and that Hollywood were all about. An absolutely essential text for anyone seriously interested in movies, and, with more than three hundred photographs, as much a treat to look at as it is to read.

• A genre-busting, thoughtful and highly readable exploration of sexuality and identity by one of Germany’s most admired writers • In this extended personal essay, Emcke draws on her own experiences to guide readers to consider how we desire, and how that affects what it means to be a person • Emcke turns her incisive reporter’s eye to her own experiences of desire and coming of age, weaving a story that is filled with evocative anecdotes and astute observations about identity, sexuality and love • Just as How We Desire attempts to resist the cultural categories and limitations put upon human desire, this broad and nuanced essay defies typical genre categories • Emcke worked as a war correspondent for Der Spiegel for fifteen years. She reported from war and crisis zones including the Gaza Strip, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq • Emcke’s reportage is critically acclaimed in Germany, where she has previously published a number of books. In 2016 she received the German Book Trade’s Peace Prize, an award previously won by Svetlana Alexievich, Susan Sontag and Margaret Atwood • How We Desire is the first of Emcke’s books to be translated into English • Will appeal to fans of Maggie Nelson’s The Argonauts, Emily Witt’s Future Sex, Eula Biss’ On Immunity, and Rebecca Solnit’s Men Explain Things To Me

Die Ss Nach 1945 written by Jan Erik Schulte and has been published by V&R Unipress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-10 with History categories.

The SS was forbidden and dissolved in 1945 by the allies. However, the history of this criminal organisation did not end. Moreover, at this point a debate on the significance, responsibility and effect of the SS and its members was taking place – a debate that lasts until today. Allegations of collective guilt were standing against the efforts of SS groups to distance themselves from the whole organisation. The narrative of the devilish SS officer came to live in magazines and films and turned the SS into an exclusive secret organisation in the media. The contributions in this volume analyse the prosecution of the SS after 1945, the personal coteries and political continuities as well as the different dimensions of a still virulent culture of remembrance of the SS in Europe.

A Not So Foreign Affair written by Andrea Slane and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-05-22 with Political Science categories.

In A Not So Foreign Affair Andrea Slane investigates the influence of images of Nazism on debates about sexuality that are central to contemporary American political rhetoric. By analyzing an array of films, journalism, scholarly theories, melodrama, video, and propaganda literature, Slane describes a common rhetoric that emerged during the 1930s and 1940s as a means of distinguishing “democratic sexuality” from that ascribed to Nazi Germany. World War II marked a turning point in the cultural rhetoric of democracy, Slane claims, because it intensified a preoccupation with the political role of private life and pushed sexuality to the center of democratic discourse. Having created tremendous anxiety—and fascination—in American culture, Nazism became associated with promiscuity, sexual perversionand the destruction of the family. Slane reveals how this particular imprint of fascism is used in progressive as well as conservative imagery and language to further their domestic agendas and shows how our cultural engagement with Nazism reflects the inherent tension in democracy between the value of diversity, individual freedoms national identity, and notions of the common good. Finally, she applies her analysis of wartime narratives to contemporary texts, examining anti-abortion, anti-gay, and anti-federal rhetoric, as well as the psychic life of skinheads, censorship debates, and the contemporary fascination with incest. An invaluable resource for understanding the language we use—both visual and narrative—to describe and debate democracy in the United States today, A Not So Foreign Affair will appeal to those interested in cultural studies, film and video studies, American studies, twentieth century history, German studies, rhetoric, and sexuality studies.
