The recent rise in prevalence and devastation of sexting among young people, as well as its complicated nature and effects, are piquing the interest of modern science and professional practice. There is no universal agreement among researchers on what sexting means, even though they have worked very hard to define it. In this review, we put forth a straightforward theoretical framework for sexting to improve how sexting has been operationalized in earlier studies. Teenagers that engage in sexting (texting plus sex) may do things like send, receive, or forward nude or partially nude photographs via mobile devices. Uncertainty exists around the actual prevalence of sexting among tweens and teens. This might be due to the behavior's overall secrecy, the quick growth of technology, and the absence of a precise definition that takes into account the additional developmental elements (e.g., peak sexual development, impulsivity). Additionally, there is a lack of understanding of the negative effects and elevated risks of sexting for youth, a vulnerable demographic, including shame and guilt, earlier sexual behavior, bullying, incarceration, substance misuse, despair, and suicide. This article's goal is to analyze teenage SEXTING practices by examining contemporary adolescents specific characteristics that may have an impact on the prevalence and consequences of SEXTING behavior. The examinations, intervention, and evaluation required to treat teenagers affected by sexting are explored as well as the implications for nursing practice.

Sexting: Gender and Teens provides a close-up look into the intimate and gendered world of teens and those who live with and work with them. The author draws upon interviews with teens, parents and caregivers, and many others who work with teens from teachers and youth workers to principals and police, we learn how the new digital world is still permeated by beliefs and patterns of earlier patriarchal structures. This three state study reveals there are significant gendered differences among teens in their perspectives on sexting, and these differences have implications for how to respond to the issue of teen sexting. Adults, too, demonstrate gendered differences in their views on teen sexting, and these differences have an important impact on the shaping of youth views about gender and sexuality. As one mother said, “Girls set the pace, and boys notch the bedpost.” Some key findings include: • The human curriculum of sexuality is both conserving and adapting, and these two impulses are always interacting. • We are in the midst of social and technological changes that have vast implications for all of our cultural notions, including sexuality. • Regarding sexting: Adults are pointing fingers in many directions and leaving adolescents to fend for themselves. This compelling account—presented through the words of participants—provides a vivid introduction to hands-on social research that will be of interest to those in gender and women’s studies as well as the broader disciplines that touch upon these concerns, such as sociology, education, psychology, media studies, criminal justice, and other fields. Sure to spark strong opinions and discussion, the book offers opportunities for sustained engagement with topics of critical interest to today’s digital world. Judith Davidson, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Graduate School of Education at University of Massachusetts–Lowell, where she teaches qualitative research methods. As a methodologist, she is particularly interested in the use of digital tools in qualitative research and working with research design for complex projects. She is a co-founder of the cross-campus Qualitative Research Network and has overseen numerous qualitative research dissertations, both activities that allow her to enjoy coaching qualitative research. She has consulted and worked on qualitative research projects in diverse areas from sexting to technology integration in K-12 schools.

Abstract: This content analysis of existing literature explored the concept of sexting and its impact on teens and young adults. The content analysis specifically examined sexting behaviors, the views regarding sexting, the social, physical, and psychological effects, and the intended and unintended consequences of sexting. Thirty studies within the last 7 years were analyzed for content. Results of this content analysis revealed that the most common types of sexting behaviors included sending and receiving nude or semi-nude photos, sending and receiving sexually explicit text messages, and forwarding nude or semi-nude photos or sexually explicit text messages from others. Findings indicated most sexting occurs between the ages of 13 to 26. Ethnic groups including Caucasian, African American, Latino, Asian, Filipino, and individuals of European descent were represented in many of the studies. Implications for social work practice were discussed.

The nexus between the digital revolution and adolescent sexual behavior has posed significant challenges to mental health practitioners, attorneys, and educators. These digital technologies may facilitate dangerous behaviors and serious consequences for some youth. Adolescent Sexual Development in the Digital Age considers adolescent sexual behavior in both clinical and legal contexts and provides a basis for clinicians, legal professionals, educators, policy makers, parents and the general public to understand the impact that technology has on human growth and development. The book's contributing authors are leading authorities in adolescent development, law, and ethics, fostering an interdisciplinary dialogue within the text. New technology poses many opportunities for both normal and risky sexual behavior in youth; including "sexting," social networking, cyber-sexual harassment, commercial exploitation of children, and child pornography. Beyond just cataloging the various technologies impacting sexual behavior, this volume offers guidance and strategies for addressing the issues created by the digital age.
