A book that challenges our notions of family honour and morality Sometime, somewhere, the conspiracy of silence around Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) in Indian homes had to be shattered. This path-breaking book"the first of its kind in the country and subcontinent"attempts to give that sexually abused child a powerful voice. It provides damning disclosures about men, and some women, in middle and upper-class families who sexually abuse their children, then silence them into submission. Based on studies, reports and investigation, this book reveals that a minimum of twenty per cent of girls and boys under the age of sixteen are regularly being sexually abused; half of them in their own homes, by adults who have the child's trust. In Bitter Chocolate, journalist and best-selling author Pinki Virani travels across the country to record the testimonies of the police, doctors, child psychologists, mental health professionals, social workers, lawyers and the traumatized victims themselves. The book opens with an account"brave and devoid of self-pity"of the author's own experience. Going beyond blaming, Pinki Virani then proceeds with her insightful analysis of the issue in three notebooks. The first spells out what constitutes CSA, why and how this happens, its devastating after-effects which haunt the victims as they grow into adulthood. The second notebook describes these effects through two real-life stories of women who were betrayed as children by men of their family. The third provides practical solutions on how to counter CSA, including a framework involving the law, the parent and their child. A special chapter addresses adults who have never before disclosed their sexual abuse as children. Plus: a nationally coordinated helpline. Accessible yet comprehensive, Bitter Chocolate is written for the young parent and guardian, principal and teacher, judge and police, lawyer and public prosecutor, teenager and tomorrow's citizen.

This book is about child sexual abuse in India. Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a serious and wide-spread problem in India as it is in many parts of the world today. The trauma associated with sexual abuse can contribute to arrested development, as well as a host of psychological and emotional disorders, that some children and adolescents may never overcome. This edited book discusses the nature and incidence of the sexual abuse of minors in India and presents an overview of research findings to date. Socio-cultural and familial risk factors involved in CSA are discussed. Common symptoms and disorders associated with sexual abuse are outlined. The book also provides guidance on child protective services, coordinated response in preventing child abuse, mental health, and law enforcement. Finally, it discusses cognitive behavioral interventions to overcome the trauma caused due to sexual abuse.

Child sexual abuse, molestation, and incest are egregious problems within the Puyallup Tribe of Indians. This crisis has largely been neglected due to significant societal and cultural obstacles up till now. A culture of silence and denial has permeated the tribe for decades and far too many lives have been needlessly destroyed as a result Indian Health Services on the Puyallup Reservation is unable to meet the extensive and ongoing mental health needs of the sexual abuse victims and tribal laws fail to protect its citizens from the long-term devastation caused by child sexual assault. the purpose of this research is to develop evidence that the extent of the problem of child sexual abuse, molestation, and incest is a severe enough problem that the tribal community is compelled to acknowledge and address it. How does child sexual abuse manifest on the Puyallup Indian Reservation? What is the history and context of this issue and what factors have contributed to the inability of tribal members to effectively address this problem? What are the long-term implications of these problems on the victims and how does this affect the overall well being of the tribe? What are some effective methods to provide culturally appropriate prevention and treatment for victims of child sexual abuse? Is the sexual abuse of children a major problem on the Puyallup Indian Reservation that requires intervention from the tribal community? These research questions are explored using an autoethnographic research methodology and an instrumental case study approach. Three decades of work with the victims of child predators coupled with unspeakable personal experiences of sexual abuse as a child have compelled the researcher to expose this serious issue and also advocate strongly for increased victim support including development of an Indian Child Advocacy Center on the Puyallup Indian Reservation.

"This 82-page report examines how current government responses are falling short, both in protecting children from sexual abuse and treating victims. Many children are effectively mistreated a second time by traumatic medical examinations and by police and other authorities who do not want to hear or believe their accounts. Government efforts to tackle the problem, including new legislation to protect children from sexual abuse, will also fail unless protection mechanisms are properly implemented and the justice system reformed to ensure that abuse is reported and fully prosecuted, Human Rights Watch said."--Publisher's website.

Child sexual abuse is a pervasive problem that can have immediate and long-term negative effects on children and youth. Yet, research into this complex phenomenon is very recent in India, as are societal attempts at intervening into the lives of children and adolescents who have experienced sexual abuse within and beyond the family. Educating parents and caregivers about child sexual abuse and other forms of child maltreatment is critical to the prevention of sexual abuse and the provision of safer homes and healthier environments for children. The authors examine the nature and incidence of child sexual abuse in India and present an overview of key research findings to date. Factors that put children, youth, and families at risk for sexual abuse are discussed from family science and socio-cultural perspectives. Implications for counselors and social workers providing therapeutic services for children in India who have been sexually abused and their families are also highlighted. Finally, the authors discuss how child sexual abuse in India can be addressed and prevented through family life education and community capacity building efforts.
