Although much research has been devoted to sexual assault survivors' experiences of receiving negative reactions (e.g., victim blame) from their support network and service providers, few studies have examined the support provider's experience during interactions with survivors. Some research has identified rape myth acceptance as a potential barrier to effective support provision. Three research questions guided the current study: Would rape myth acceptance function as a barrier among other samples of support providers? What other barriers interfere with support provision? What differences emerge between provider and survivor experiences of the same interaction? The current study was conducted in two phases to survey nurses and patients about their experiences in the emergency department (ED) when a sexual assault survivor presents for medical care immediately following an assault. Phase One assessed ED nurses' ( N = 54) past support interactions with sexual assault survivors. Five variables were measured as potential predictors: rape myth acceptance, psychological distress, training and experience specific to sexual assault, and personal history of sexual victimization. Low response rate for Phase Two precluded the planned dyadic analyses of nurses' and patients' reports of the same interaction. Hypotheses were largely unsupported; nurses reported providing positive social reactions more frequently than negative, and expected predictors were not associated with provision of social reactions. Qualitative data and exploratory analyses demonstrate a richer description of nurses' experiences. Recruitment strategies and social desirability effects are discussed among possible limiting factors.
